why did this not work?

ok... my oil cooler and pan were both leaking BAD. together oil was about 1 quart every 300-400 miles id guesstimate. So i wanted to fix it, I got the oil cooler just fine BUT.....

I do not understand what i did wrong...the oil pan was hard coming out and i barely got it back in. I had to take off the oil pump when i took it out and when i reinstalled the pan. The manual says that you can get it out and in on the f series without taking oil pump off. My oil cooler is slanted like a f series cooler so i dont think its a swap...i believe everything is bone stock from factory. E-series says you have to take oil pump off and set in pan. I tested it...i put the oil pump on first and tried putting the pan on...lo and behold it wouldnt go on halfway- just hit the tranny housing.

The only thing i didnt follow was taking off the tranny cooler lines which mine are part way flexible hose with clamps and i did not raise the truck after lifting the engine because my truck sits up a little. Is that my fault? Could it really move the no 1 crossmember down that much? Maybe i will raise the front end and block it tomorrow and make sure the gasket seats right. (now that i think about it i guess raising the truck WOULD help...alas, user error!)

I DID finally get it almost reassembled. After priming the oil pump WITH THE PAN UNDER IT....i finally got that bolted up but it was a struggle. Man that last hour and a half sucked. As i write this post...almost 1/4 way down from my belt is soaked in motor oil from trying to prime the pump and having everything leak all over me. New pair of jeans devoted to tinkering as well as an angry mom.

young anthony....TIRED!

*****almost done with your hoist Bill....i was very busy today couldnt work on it until 11:00 tonight. Hopefully i will be done soon just gotta go to buckeye truck in findlay and get some SCA coolant and an oil filter.******

Re: why did this not work?

If you did it by the book info, the pump must be removed to remove the pan and reinstalled after the pan is located back where it belongs so to speak. Did I not send you the directions etc..

Re: why did this not work?

yes Pete i followed the directions you sent me almost 6 months ago. It said remove pan and then remove oil pump. for van it says remove pump and lower into pan then remove pan.

Im sure you have plenty of first hand experience. Maybe i read the directions wrong... im fairly sure it said remove pan and then remove oil pump. Does that mean remove pan from mating surface and not from truck as a whole? That would make more sense. still the wording is a bit confusing.

I have it back up now i just need to bolt the pan up.

Re: why did this not work?

I don't know of any RWD vehicle that you can get the pan off (in vehicle) without at least removing the oil pickup... I'd guess there are but I have yet to come across one.

Re: why did this not work?

Heck, i figured you couldn't get the pan off period in these trucks, especially the van. When i messed with it the pan would hardly move at all. Maybe come down 2 or 3 inches...

Re: why did this not work?

i went out and reread....i just took the context wrong. It says remove oil pan meaning take it down and then remove pump and take whole thing out. Just confused me when it had different instructions for the econoline...

Ayuh,......

I've never seen anything smaller than a Class 8 Truck that would allow the removal of the Base.....

Re: why did this not work?

To remove the oil pan on a E350 with the 460 Gas motor, you have to lower the pan, remove the oil pump and then remove the pan. I doubt the 7.3 is any different.
