Why does my engine smoke?

I have a light blue smoke when I idle. When I am driving it pulling a trailer or accelerating (to pass, go up a hill ect.) I get a black cloud. I also have a hard time getting it to start. It just turns over.... A lot. The wts light stays on for some time. Is this my glow plugs?

More info needed....

You need to tell us all the scenario, the complete vehicle info including any mods done. We are waiting......but black smoke is a bad diesel burn, poor maintenance, messes up sensors, do you have a code scanning tool? look for codes first, they usually tell you where to start looking.
I always go watch the videos at POWERSTROKEHELP.COM - The Information Source for Ford Power Stroke Diesel Owners, the guy (Bill) seems to know what he's talking about.

Are you losing engine oil? Do you have to add oil all the time?

I agree with the more info needed, but the IDI doesn't have any sensors or computer controls to pull codes from. Hard start and light blue smoke sounds like air intrusion and burning oil. Dark smoke on acceleration is a good indicator of over fueling. The WTS light will stay on for about 12-15 seconds on a cold start..

Info givin'

Yes its burning oil. I just bought the truck about a month ago so I don't really know the history. When I first start the truck after its been siting over night or all day it is hard to start. When it finally starts it gives out a large plume of dark black smoke. Then once its running it idles with a light blue smoke. Now when I'm driving it gives of some blue smoke until I really accelerate then it gives me a lot of black smoke. I can drive it for 10-15 miles (should be warm) go into a store come out and try to start the thing and the WTS light stays on for 20-30 seconds and then I try to start it and its again hard to start. When it does it gives me that same smoke..... Will Lucas products help with any of this? New glow plugs? Head gasket?

Cool still no info...

OK, how about you enlighten us with some info about your truck: year,model,options,auto,4x2,4x4,mileage,where you live , cold, hot, hills, flat, towing or not......you should put all that on your signature using "my account" and then "edit signature".
You probably need new glow plugs to start, that black smoke when trying to start is because glow plugs taking too long to ignite the fuel so engine is getting "flooded" and then it does starts it smokes, meaning all that extra diesel ignited. You need to do a complete service, if you just bought the truck so many things could be in need of maintenance. Fuel filter, air filter, tranny fluid and filter, differential, glow plugs, intercooler needs cleaning, well send us more info ok,thanks and congrats on new truck and welcome to the world of "never need to buy a new car"!

How fast does the motor turn over when starting, can you count the revolutions or is it turning too fast?

Sorry new to this forum thing... its a 93 ford with a 7.3 international. has 180k miles. its 4X4. The guy I bought it from added a device he called an "either shot" otherwise no modes have been done to this truck.
It turns over pretty fast but I could prob. still count the amount of times it turns over.

Sounds to me your hard starting is a result of the fuel system loosing prime. I new return line set may fix that. This would also be letting in air causing blue smoke.

Blue smoke can be caused by quite a few things air in fuel, retarded timing, lack of fuel or burning oil.

What does the blue smoke smell like diesel or oil burning?

As far as your glow plugs go it sound like they are good to me otherwise they would not stay on that long.

I would not wasting your money on lucas products. There is no magic fix in a bottle just snake oil.

replace the fuel return line at the fuel filter with a clear fuel line(see in my photos) so you can see when the truck idles if you are getting air in the system

Correct starter speed is essential for easy starting.

He DID post in the 7.3 Indirect Injection (pre powerstroke) section so it's safe to assume he has a totally mechanical 7.3.
Jew260, your blue smoke generally means you're burning engine oil . Since you don't know the history, could be just worn out---bad rings, bad valve guides. Black smoke---over-rich fuel, clogged air filter, IP set wrong, etc.

I also have a 2010 F-250, 6.4 diesel and it has been smoking a lot lately. It does it once the truck has warmed up and does it every 20 miles or so. The smoke is white and there is a lot of it. The cars behind me have to back off. The truck only has 33,000 miles on it. This is my first diesel, should I take it to the dealership?

Wrong forum. This is for 1994 and earlier 7.3.
