are the turbos they used on the 2002 7.3l powerstroke interchangable with the IDI. I know they are reverse turning or something to that effect, I just have the chance to pick up this garret turbo for cheap and wondered if it would work

No. It will not provide any advantage over the factory IDI style turbos. It is built to provide much higher boost pressures, and installing it on an IDI will defeat all advantages of it, seeing as you will have to severely limit boost.

So what turbo would work well? I've scoured local junkyards but no factory IDI turbos to be found. I know I could fab up the pieces to put just about any turbo on my van. Heck the exhaust can't be more difficult than custom headers. I don't have the cash to plunk down on an ATS or Banks setup.

The non wastegated turbos Ats and Banks are a to4b with a P trim wheel and a V or H trim compressor.
Ats and factory wastegated are a t3 stage 3 turbine and a t4 H trim compressor
This is based on all the ones I have rebuilt for these trucks.
An HX 35 off a cummins would be a good starting point.
Also one of the chinese knock offs from ebay, a t3t04e , put new garrett bushings in it and get it rebalanced and they are pretty good.
