Will not start while hot

I have a 1993 Ford F350 with Navistar 7.3 IDI engine. I have changed the glow plugs and glow plug relay. I used Baru DC9's. I have converted to run vegetable oil but hard start condition was going on before. When I start in the morning the glow wait to start light stays on for the full eight seconds and engine starts fine. If I shut down and do not get a wait to start it will not fire off without some diesel additive squirted into the breather. If I raise hood and let the engine cool until I get wait to start light again it starts right up. I had a friend show me where the sensor is on the driver side lower on engine that sends a signal to the glow plug relay and removed the wire but still no light. Is there a way to install a manual switch to cycle glow plugs on if needed? Any ideas?

Quite often "won't start while hot" is a bad starter. Either pull out and inspect the bendix end bushing, or check the cranking amps when cranking.

Yea I got some bad diesel after a bad storm we had and didnt know not to crank for over 15 seconds I think I damaged the starter because sometimes I have to click key to start several times before it will catch. How do you check the cranking amps? That was a brand new starter too !!!

Buy an inductive amp meter at your favorite parts store.

7.3 idi no start or excessive long crank
