What do you mean by scary? I don't think you'll get a wiring harness for our trucks from a parts house, and Ford no longer carries them. I'm in the same boat as you at the moment though.... I just removed my main underhood harness to fix it up. The first thing I did was lay the harness on a 4X8 sheet of plywood and sprayed "superclean" all over it. I hosed it off with the garden hose, connected to a hot water tap. The super clean gets all the oil, dirt and grit off of the connectors and makes the electrical tape on the harness shine !! But don't go over board with the water because i'm sure if it soaks long enough, it'll do some sort of damage. When it's clean, blow out all of the connectors with compressed air and clean them with an electrical component cleaner. Then you can go ahead and fix what needs to be fixed. I was able to get new headlight sockets from the local parts house, that you can solder and heatshrink to your original harness. the locking tabs were broken on my original sockets. I got rid of the crimp on connectors the the previous owner had put on, I fixed that by solder and dual wall heatshrink. I basically fixed what looked ugly. My main harness to engine harness connector had melted sometime in its life and the PO had crimped all the wires together, which later on I soldered and heat shrinked the wires together. This time I fixed it by installing a 12 pin "Deutsch Connector". Then I wrapped the whole harness with 3M electrical tape (right over all the old tape), I found the 3M to be about the best match to the factory tape. Good luck with what you do!! BTW my truck is only 4 years younger than me LOL.
