My neighbor has a '90 250 and is having a problem with the starting system. She is a single mom who's strapped for cash and the truck is a heap. To have the truck taken to a shop could cost more than what the trucks worth. She recently had new batteries and cables put in, but now the truck will hardly crank. I think it might be the solenoid. What should be the voltage reading at the starter.
Try Jumpering the fender mounted relay first.. if it is old it will not close and pass full power to the solenoid on the starter. If the starter is suspect.. use a mallet/hammer to hit it as you attempt to start it......... if it spins a little faster the starter brushes/armature is fubar........
Azone has the Mitsubishi gear reduction starter part #16561 for about $120.... Starter uses about 200amps....12 volts.

Good point Mr R....... what size are those new batteries.
2 850 CCA minimum are required...... anything lower will not start our trucks as there is a huge power requirement at startup.

im having the same problem it was cranking fine then it started to crank slow for like 3 starts,if you kept cranking it would kind of free off as though to speak then the next time i tryed to start then it just clicked repeatedly and then died.
now when i turn the key it just clicks onces, the fuel in water light apears and the abs light comes on but no cranks??? the batterys are fully charged, i took off the starter and checked the brushes and armatage and they seem to be fine, is there anything else i can do?.
second to this i have also been having a problem with my battery earth connector melting, is there some sort of open circuit passing power right back to earth? the glow plugs are old but the glow plug solenoid is brand new so is there a chance that the fender mounted relay would be the problem here?
please help if you can?.

Remove the starter and have it tested. Look at the Bendix end of the starter and check how the bushing looks. If it's "mushed" out, you need to replace the starter.

Specifically which earth connection is melting? There are the two main ones to the engine block (one from each battery) and others as well. In general melting obviously = heat and heat is usually resistance, as in a poor connection.

Dont overlook the negative battery cables. I had the same problem w/my new to me 93. I replaced the positive cables and had good batteries and it would barely turn over. It turned out to be the negative cables.
