1985 F250 Diesel Quesiton

I just bought my first diesel today and I am having trouble with it. Really need some help. It is 4x4 with 6.9L. Drove great when test drove it and when I left the lot. Got to the gas station and put diesel in it, it would not start so we jumped across the sylanoid and it fired right up. Went to a few other places and came home had no more trouble. Well I get home and was just kinda looking over the truck and seeing if we could get the windows to go up or down, not luck but that is not the problem the problem is it wont start again. So we decide it is the key switch with the tumblers. So we run wires from the sylanoid inside the truck so we can start it and we go to take it down the road to just try it out and I put it in reversed backed out of the spot and it will not go into neutral, drive or anything execpt park and reverse. Can any one plese tell me what I need to do to fix this. I was so ready to have me some fun.

Could the key switch being messed up be the problem.

I know this goes without saying but maybe you need to turn the key to the run position and then jump the solenoid. Maybe you did this in the gas station and not in your driveway.

My trucks a manual so I dont have this problem, but my friend does have a van that if in park wont shift into anything if the battery is dead, a nightmare if you break down in traffic and put into park to restart.
