1987 F250 Automatic 4wd tranny

I'm assuming I have a C6 transmission in my 1987 Ford F250 4wd. I'm not well versed on ford transmissions. Are the C6 transmissions from gas powered trucks interchangeable with diesel trucks? Mine is a 4wd so would I only be able to get one from another 4wd truck? Any difference if the gas truck is a 300-6 or 302-351-390-460 V8? Would a C6 from a car work?

Re: 1987 F250 Automatic 4wd tranny

The bolt bellhousing bolt pattern for the diesel C-6 is different then the gasser versions. The bellhousing looks similar to a big block C-6 but slightly different. You could possibly get a 2wd one and convert it to a 4x4 using some parts from your current tranny but that would involve quite a bit of work. Basically need to remove everything in the case to swap the output shafts on the end of the tranny (look at pics in my gallery) But sadly to say I believe you will need to find a C-6 that was nestled behind a diesel. Hope this helps, and maybe some more knowledgable about the bellhousings will come along and comment.
