ATS Turbo in Rancho Cordova Pick-n-Pull

Saw this today when I was out there, it looks like a complete ATS setup, not sure on wastegated or not or if there were any gauges, (didn't notice any, but I didn't check too close, didn't think about it) but the trubo and what not was all there. The exhaust looked to be one piece welded, so you'll need some cutting stuff, and the air filter was missing, but I bet someone could pick it up for under $100, and I bet it'll be gone before the weekend, so someone on here should go pick it up. It's the rancho cordova pick-n-pull, right off sunrise about 3 miles south of 50. The truck was a blue-gray 85 F250, roughly in the center of the large group of full size trucks on the south end of the yard. (to the right as soon as you go in)

If some does get it, or sees it's gone, post it on here and I'll delete this thread before someone goes.

I spent 5 hours wrenching on this truck today, left everything there which was not much since I didn't get very far. There are no gauges, but there is a mounting plate in the dash so there may have been one...

I don't know that a cutter would be required, as I did not trace down all the mount points for the exhaust. What I did discover is that many bolts which would need to be disassembled are hidden, or in a very difficult position. The exhaust appears to be professionally done, I could not find a seam from the Y connector back, but I didn't look hard either. The pipe to frame connector in front of the spare was bolted, so I expect the remainder will be as well.

Most of my time was spent pulling the intake manifold and the things around it, so I could assess if there was enough access to even get the turbo out. (Note to the guy that took the injector pump before me: Be nice next time, instead of just cutting off all the tubes and wiring, someone else could have used them. It also makes for a certainty that the next guy will draw blood - I did several times, and your unknown name was used with a number of well known expletives).

The bolts connecting the engine exhaust to the turbo intake are in the back, and face down, so I'm not certain this can be extracted without cutting or pulling the entire motor forward. The upper two bolts for the the turbo exhaust to the tail pipe are quite blind, and there is little room for leverage, but this might be possible. I could not get the bottom two bolts to break free, and I didn't bring any liquid wrench.

I thought about trying to split the turbo, but the two blind bolts in the back had very little if any clearance to turn a wrench, so I decided against that too...

I expect this is 2 half day jobs to get this stuff out without cutting, likely by extracting part of the dash/firewall around the turbo to get access. The last problem here, is that the truck is another foot higher off the ground than the standard 4x4 high boy, and it was painful for this old geek to jump in and out of the engine bay.

I have not yet decided if it is worth the time and effort to try to extract this beast, or if WAF issues will prevent further wrenching (she hates trying to get the grease out...). That said, I may just take the map gas cutter out there and be done with it.

If I end up getting the thing out, I'll send jaluhn a gift cert for a good dinner somewhere. If someone gets up the gumption and gets to it before I do, I hope you will do the same.

It took me 2 hours to pull entire exhaust and all turbo parts today on my POS in San Diego. The Turbo came out in 2 parts, the intake with one bolt to air Plenum, and the turbo with the 2 bottom bolts and 2 side bolts. There was a little heat shield plate too. A little wiggle and cutting of oil and wire it came out. The Exhaust had one pipe that loops under to connect both sides to the turbo and then the main pipe that drops down and back. I was really lucky with no rusted exh bolts. Do not cut if you can avoid it.

Just could not let it go this morning, made another run at it to no avail. Removed the 4 bolts from the exhaust intake, but nothing would move. After trying to unbolt the exhaust pipes, it became obvious the only way to get this thing out was to move the motor forward to get access to the bolts facing the firewall. There were cherry pickers in the yard, but that was more than I had a stomach for.

With one exception, all the piping is in really good condition. The bottom of the truck was dragged over something, and there are fresh abrasion marks on the bottom of the Y connector next to the auto trans pan, I seriously doubt it would leak. The exhaust pipe has a single welded seam at a connection joint just past the transmission. The exhaust pipe is bolt mounted to the frame.

It appeared the turbo is a NON-wastegate model, the exhaust turbine appeared to have '96 stamped on it. The steel braided oil feeder hose was in good shape, and there was an exhaust temp sensor, with wiring (also steel braded, though previously mentioned moron cut it). Interesting: the six bolts from the oil distribution housing to the exhaust turbine were metric sized bolts. Go figure.

I'm going to leave this to someone more persistent than I am. You will need a very long socket extension to get to some of the upper exhaust nuts from the undercarriage, and a 2" extension to get to the passenger side manifold above the starter. I only had a 5" it bound in the back. I also advise not cutting. I left all the parts, as previously mentioned, it only needs an air filter and gauges.

I have pictures from the front of the motor, and a pix of the ATS serial number if anyone is interested, it appears to be 02342.
