If a person has a bad injector, or two, what sound might the engine make? Knock, wrap, etc? If an injector is bad would it smooth out at higher rpm or under load?
I bought a parts truck and it has this noise, I'd prefer not to describe. If you have had a bad injector and it was the cause of engine noise I would be grateful to hear you describe this noise. We all hope for the simple things, right?]
Thanks,in advance, for the time you take to answer this.
ive heard a knock is the best description for the sound a band injector makes, hopefully some others will respond soon! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif
Incidently I have a bad injector, picked a new one up today. My noise is similar to a rod knockI have had it before. I get smoke on accelleration after idle at a stop light, yes the knock will/can smooth out at highway speeds to a certain extent and come back in at idle.. To test the specific injector crack the injection line on the injector 1/2+ turn, this drops it of line and usually will cause the engine to stumble (with a good injector), it may not make any difference with a bad injector but may stop the knocking noise. Use a rag to cover the injector when cracking the line due to High Pressure fuel spray.
It depends on the failure mode of the injector. If the pintle is leaking, you get predetonation (the sound of really far advanced timing). If it is stuck open, you get a "tinking" sound that comes all the way up into the injector line (the sound of the injector line becoming part of your combustion process) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif .
I've loosened each injector but can't seem to isolate the sound for sure. I had my hand on the lines and they all seemed the same as the engine ran. It's a wrap wrap wrap that stays constant at idle or as you increase throttle - have not had it under load. It is not a sharp sound. Short of pulling the injectors, taking them in for a pressure test, any ideas to isolate the injector ( if it is indeed an injector)? Aside from the noise, it idles smooth and there is no hint of a miss. I fear the worst.
Have you done any work on the trans, Just a WAG but take a look at the bolts securing the torque convertor. See if the TC can be moved back and forth or rotation side to side on the flywheel. If possible check the flywheel for cracks with a mirror.
No tranny work that I know of. Got it running again today and drove it up and down the long lane. Tranny shifts well, brakes work. I cracked the injectors again and had another listen. Noise in upper part of motor on drivers side. Noise lessens most with front injector loosened. I think I'll pull the injectors on the drives side, take them in and see if they are okay. Maybe I'll pull the rocker cover and see if some of the racket is comming from the valve train. It idles dead smooth and blows no smoke at all when you gun it - clean. We hope on.
