I was trailering my donar truck home, and got it hung up offloading and needed to start it, but the GP system doesn't work so I gave it a shot of ether to start it. I know, I hate the stuff too. I crank it and it sputtered and began to knock badly. I didn't let it start, it was just cranking with the starter. Tonight, I pulled the heads (engine on stand) and there is no sign of anything in the cylinder. One piston looks like it had something bashing the top of it (GP tip perhaps) at one time, but the marks looked very old. What else should I look for? Could an injector have been damaged? Also, what does the "20" stamped in the pistons indicate? Thanks. Ty.
The knocking is the ether igniting ahead of the correct time trying to force the engine backwards. The 20 is probably the oversize of the pistons on last rebuild.........is it sleeved.

You used too much either. Although I only had to use either in my truck only once, if you spray it correctly, the engine will speed up slowly to fire, rather that knock, spit, lockup, and then fire. If that made any sense. What you experianced is perfectly normal when you use to much.
