Broken Bell Housing

I had Ford do a complete clutch job replacing everything about 50,000 miles ago (total miles on truck - 205,000) and now my fork has broken the bell housing. I've purchased a used one being shipped to me but I haven't got it yet. I keep reading that one should lube the TOB & wonder if that could be the problem after 50,000 miles. BTW how do you do that, lube I mean? Also what problems can I have replacing the bell housing. I have to remove a 4 spd stick shift and this is a 2WD F250. Ford is telling me it is a 4hr job.

Most people just pull the fork out and reach in with a handful of grease to hand-pack the TOB and quill.

Ford also offers a remote lube TOB, but you have to pull the transmission to install it.

Angry Where do I find one?

Now I have a different problem. I ordered a used Bell housing from National Parts out of Jacksonville, Fl. They found one in Oregon and it was to be shipped to me here in Northern CA (Loomis). After a week nothing has arrived and though I received an invoice via email and my credit card has paid them, I can't get them to give me any info or a tracking #. I keep leaving messages but get no reply. I'm getting that ripped off feeling. Any other places to get one? Can it be welded? It is original so is it alum? Help, somebody.

I hope that your bell-housing has arrived.

While you are waiting, try to find a welder and ask about the housing. I have been told that it never hurts to ask.

Find someone with a TIG welder that is setup for aluminum. I have found that the guys that use a MIG spoolgun to weld aluminum, the welds don't look as nice (more porous bead, penetration isn't as deep/complete).

Tig is the really only way to go. I used it on my intake manifold but you need the temps up near melting point of aluminum. Use an oxy-acyt torch to warm it up. When the soot blows off of it the temp is just right. set the torch to a sooty flame and try it out. It really works. Its the preheating that does the trick. I tried a test weld without preheating.... What a mess. When the plug fialyy got hot enough the weld finally looked good. Porisity is hard to burn out of aluminum welding in mig or tig. Done correctly and kept clean it will be stronger than before because of the weld thickness.

I have welded a 6.9 bellhousing before, and so far, it was a success. I'm running a strange combination of parts in my 7.3 truck, and I found out the hard way that I needed a little clutch clearance in the bellhousing. I TIG welded it all, after it was very clean, and so far, so good. I ran into a couple porous spots, but for the most part it welded fine.
Looking at the pictures of yours, I would replace it, but if it came down to needing the truck, I think it could be saved, at least long enough to find a replacement.

Smile Broker Bell Housing

Thanks guys. Mine had a piece broken out and I never could find it so welding might have been a problem. Anyway The parts finder I was complaining about finally got one for me for just under $200. They had two lined up but the first one in Oregon raised their price to $300 so the other was shipped to me from Idaho. Unfortunately they didn't keep me posted and I was getting panicky as I need to be on the road this coming Friday. She's all fixed now. The pressure plate was the culprit I think. Just did a clutch overhaul so I'm ready to roll. I'll remember the welding trick if it happens again.
