Chevron Diesel

I've only had by 1985 E350 Diesel for about 6 months and I love it. The only issue I have has been engine noise while driving until recently. Until recently I used to fuel up at the Shell station down the street with no real problems but Saturday on my way out of town I realized I needed fuel so I stopped in at the Chevron station for a fill up and head down the road. After about a mile the engine noise noticeably dropped and performance noticeably improved. later on that trip when the chevron fuel ran down and I switched over the the Shell tank the engine noise returned and performance reduced. Can anyone tell me what I need to look for in diesel fuel to maintain this reduced noise improved performance?

Fuel additives will help.... probably already in most fuel but extra is nice too. I use Hayes Diesel Treat.... with good results. Had to change the fuel filter last week as I do it regularly..... filled the filter with HDT and installed it..... had a full tank of fuel I was selected to...... highway speeds 65+ MPH got 17 MPG and the truck has not sounded this good in years.

I believe the advance piston was sticking in the bore and was causing poor fuel mileage 10 MPG at best for the past couple years. The engine runs completely different now so quiet, no tapping noises.... I did increase idle and fast idle speeds about 200RPM for the winter. Truck stop fuel is already laced with additives, but extra added will only enhance that.

My thoughts when I originated this post was what info on the pump would tell me what was in the fuel and which additives were the ones to look for. I'm thinking of just sticking with Chevron and Texaco fuels.

Let me tell u something about today's diesel fuels, they are getting strait out dry.... All of these fuels where getting at the pumps don't have half the lubricants they used to when these old 6.9s of our where in production. there are additives and everything else but... i know and old diesel mechanic that taught me to put ATF (auto trans fluid) in the tank. Apparently there are so many minerals and rich lubricants in ATF it makes up for this dry fuel Our trucks where never designed to run on this dry of fuel,I think thats part of the reason why alot of the 6.9s injector pups are failing yea they arent exactly the perfect design they are the first diesel engine Ford put into these pickups, I know a few other guys that are having this problem. im having the same problem myself it started this summer and its going to cost me about a grand if i dont do myself. I have an 87 F250 ATS turbo, K&N filter in the box and Im not afraid to say a 4 inch strait pipe, so i have a few extra horses invested in it with about 187,000 miles on it. I usually put about a 1/4 to 1/2 a bottle of ATF in my tank hell the truck will take anything u give it u can put a hole bottle in it if u want it will be all the better. There are other alternatives to keep those 6.9s healthy biofuels are excellent for your motor. I did read an article in Diesel power magzine about this guy that had a early thousend excursion with the 7.3 powerstroke. He was running used ATF and 15% diesel in his rig and it was working fine he said there was a small increase in horse power and fuel mileage. They didnt know how good it would be for the motor but the guys been doing it for awhile and never had any problems. They also said the old IDI motors like are's would also be more tolerent then these new common rail motors would be if there was going to be any problems. So you probaly just got some fuel that was a little watered down or something and ur engine dint really agree with it. Any ways I hope I answered ur question on the subject, good luck and keep that diesel runnin!

I agree with the ATF claim, a buddy of mine runs statight ATF in his 97 7.3 PSD and he says there's a slight improvement overthr pump diesel. One thing he said was there is a little more smoke at idle out of the exhaust, but other then that he has nothing but good to say about it

I run a whole quart of ATF per tank of fuel. Seems to make the engine run better and quieter thats for sure.

I would like to find a steady supply of used ATF like i can with motor oil or hydraulic oil. I would much rather run 100% ATF than i would oil. I also get the smoke at idle but only when its cold. Other than that it just stinks like crazy
