Hey all, really quick...I just got myself a nice new holley red pump off ebay (35 bucks woo hoo!)
I figure ill go for that since im having the same problems as someone else who ive been reading about and that is that after replacing the fuel line with a clear one to the filter tower, the fuel runs back down and its a pain getting it started until it repumps the fuel...does this mechanical pump have a check? or is there one in the first place?
i figure just bypass the pump with an electric one since so many 6.9-ers swear by doing so...
my question is that even after spending 2 hours of going through the archives i cant get a post on someones site (maybe mels?) on how to correctly install the pump on the rail and what to wire the pump to..
does anyone have it bookmarked still?
thanks guys!

If there are NO air leaks into the system the fuel will not drain back. You have an air leak on the engine some where. Installing the electric just ahead of the FSV under the truck will push the fuel. Remove the manual lift pump if you install the electric and put a Chebby big block blockoff plate over the hole.

I would also recommed getting rid of the mechanical pump and cover the hole in the block with the Big Block Chevy Block off plate. You can get one at your local Autozone for about $8. It comes with a gasket and is chrome. My Holly Red. Mount it close to the tank switch on the driver's side frame rail. These pumps like to push rather than pull fuel. I replaced the nylon fuel line with high quality rubber, diesel rated, hose. Here is the block off plate.
Hope that helps,
Heath

Definitely mount it below the frame rails inline with the supply line just forward of teh selector valve. An inline filter is recommended with a lot of the cheapo autozone type e-pumps. I have a purolator and it keeps up with my fuel demands just fine. I'd like to wire it for an ignition trigger too, but I thought you needed a fuel pump relay and not a solenoid. What's better? Mine is toggle switched and fused(3 amp) right now. Any ideas? The only way you'll have problems is if you mount the pump above the level of the fuel tanks..as Heath said they push and don't pull. Learned it the hard way.

An electric pump will help you recover from an air leak, but you should still pursue the actual cause of the problem. It's not so much any kind of fuel pump check valve action that prevents the fuel from draining back, as it is the vacuum from the return line part of the system that holds the fuel in the system.
thanks a bunch everyone, im going to see if i can get it done today.I looked down to where my mechanical pump sits and everything down there is covered in what im pretty sure is motor oil, that explains where im losing the quart every 2 weeks since she dosent smoke...i guess the gasket musta found its way out or something.
Also, occasionally the truck dosent have pickup, its almost as though the fuel is gelled (but its been around 45-50 here and hasnt reached freezing at night) and even though you hold the pedal to the floor, it just dosent pick up speed as it normally would, could this mean my lift pump is on its way out & the motor isnt getting the fuel it needs, or is it my i-pump timing (which i know is off since the motor always sounds like 1000 jackhammers going crazy in the motor?
I want to get my fuel problem fixed so i can get the timing done on the motor properly without the truck sputtering..etc...etc..
Ive checked for leaks on the fuel return, replaced hoses and clamps and its been running noticably better, but after its been shut down overnight, it seems the fuel runs far back down the lines and in the morn it starts for about 2 seconds then dies, and takes a lot of cranking on that new lifetime warrenty starter or a little shot of wd-40 to get it going again...
Ill keep searching that return line system, ive already bypassed the fuel selector valve & am running off my front tank...
