Front axle offset?

I just put new tires, brakes, ball joints and such on my 83. After I finished I noticed the front drivers side tires sticks out about an inch more than the passengers side. It was the same before I did any repairs, though, just wondering what would be the cause of it.
Nothing appears to be visibly bent framewise or bodywise.
Anyone ever had this problem?

Thanks

Re: Front axle offset?

weird, different thickness of tire?...running 265s on one side and 235s on the other? is it the entire thing? maybe a different rotor was used in the past....is the camber messed up or is it just as if the driver side wheel has a spacer on it?

Re: Front axle offset?

Given that you have a "HD" I believe it has the solid axle rather than the TTB. Which means it has a front track bar that locates the front axle side-to-side. If you had everything jacked up and the axle hanging down, it might take a little time for the springs to re-settle and the axle to shift back over.

Re: Front axle offset?

I checked the VIN and it says its an HD, but it doesn't have the solid front axle. It has the 3850 lb independent, which I assume is the TTB your talking about. It has the two arms going to the center of the crossmember and one bolts in front of the other....right?
I'm wondering if the bushings at that connection are worn out.
Have to take that apart and see, I'm getting new front shackles and leaf springs very soon, will check them at that time.
Thanks

Re: Front axle offset?

'83-(I believe)'85 F250HD's and F350's had the TTB with a Dana 50. Basicly a 44 w/ 60 outers. I would look to see if the pivot bushing is worn out and/or if the spring centering pin is not in the hole.

Re: Front axle offset?

I just changed my shock lower bkt this afternoon and had the drivers side ubolts and saddles out and the alignment pins are in good shape.
I've got to take some frame to wheel measurements and see if it is the cab/nose and not a suspension issue at all.
Thanks for the info.

Re: Front axle offset?

OK, I knew some of the "HD's" had solid front axles,,,, it was worth a shot!!

BTW, "TTB" stands for Twin Traction Beam, a takeoff of Ford's Twin I beam name.
