Glow plug bypass

OK, I printed out Ziggsters glow plug bypass diagram and purchased the parts. Yesterday (Sunday) I unhooked the controller completely and wired up the push button set-up. The Button is rated at 20 amps and I believe I got 12 AWG wire and an inline fuse holder with 10 amp fuse. I clipped the purple wire with the push-on connector from the relay and use a solderless crimp connector to attach it to the bypass wire. I routed the new red wire back from the relay up and around the rear of the engine and thru an existing wire hole to the switch and then from the switch back out the wire hole thru the firewall to the battery post on the drivers side (shortest route) I used all solderless crimp connectors and a good crimper and then electrical tape to cover them up. I finished it up with zip ties to keep wire chafing to a minimum. MY QUESTION; Do I let the original controller and connector just hang there or should I attempt to tape up those ends in case I need to re-assemble it later? Also, would a 7 count (1 mississippi, 2 mississippi, etc) be sufficient for the button time?

Thanks for all your help,

Jeff

Re: Glow plug bypass

Jeff, you should unplug the controller from the connector. An honest 10 seconds with a watch is what I would use.

Re: Glow plug bypass

I did unplug the controller. I was just wondering if I need to wrap the plug and or the controller to weatherproof them?

Thanks,

Jeff

Re: Glow plug bypass

Na. You could wrap the end up just to eliminate the remotest possiblity of anything shorting in there.

Re: Glow plug bypass

I would plaster some dielectric grease into the connetor in the event you want to sell the truck and want to hook it back up. Also don't hold the plugs on longer than 10-12 seconds. If it does not start, wait a bit and do it again, I know so many people who hold them on for 10 sec, then if it does not start, they jump up to 15-20 and so on. A beru/motorcraft plug will only last 15-17 seconds before it melts internally.

Re: Glow plug bypass

I started my truck up from semi-cold late last night and the bypass seemed to work great. I will leave the heater unplugged and start her again from dead cold to make sure all is OK. Sure is weird how I turn on my key and now have to press a button. I can only hope this cures my ever plagueing problem with cold starts.

Will verify either late tonight or early in the morning.

thanks for the help and info. I will put the grease in both the socket and controller and find my roll of duct tape. Now lets see, last time I saw that tape was with the kids and that chair.......... Hmmmmmmmm. Re: Glow plug bypass

I went out this morning to an unplugged truck. It had been siting for 36 hours and the time to test was upon me!! Anyway! I turned the key to on, pressed the GP button for a nine count, released and hit the starter. She turned over and attempted to fire off. I relased the key and tried again. Happy sounds!! My baby fired up and you could tell she was a little cold. This was the first time in years that old blue started up without assistance form ether, block heater or a warm garage. Hopefully I can now rely on her to start whenever there is not any pluggin's around.

thanks to Ziggster for the schematics and everyone alse for the parts lists. My addiction to this site is JUSTIFIED!!!!!
