The Mule truck as my friends have named it...

Finally got the stacks installed and functional and thought I would share a few pictures of my summer's obsession! Hope to do the head gaskets through the winter (after hunting season of course) and clutch. I have a reman. IP, new injectors, new glow plugs and harness, etc. all waiting for the head gasket change. Have ARP studs and full gasket set as well.

Anyway, here are some looks at "The Mule" as my buddies have begun calling it. Still needs some body repair, but not too bad overall.

The Mule
The Mule Nose
The Mule dumping
The Mule Rear

Whitehorse, anything look familiar?

Re: The Mule truck as my friends have named it...

The rear wheels are throwing me off. Are they singles made dual or am I seeing things that aren't there??

Good, stout, handy looking truck.

Nice looking rig, F250's look so much better with Dana 60's under them; mine should look similar after I'm done with it.

Yep, they are 10,000 dually adapters. The standard dual rims will not clear my leaf springs as the frame on the 87 is like 38 inches wide and the frame on the 85 Cab/chassis was 34 inches wide. I had to remove/relocate the spring pads etc. She is not done, but knowing what all I have done to her, looking at the pics makes me feel pretty darn good! I also completed everything myself, welding, relocting, etc., etc. etc.

I bought the bed and the hoist setup but of course it was a custom install. The hoist is a 5 ton grainmaster and seems to be quite capable of dumping 5 tons! It is a powered by a 12V hydraulic power unit, as the PTO/pump setup was just too expensive for the amount of use it will see.

[/ QUOTE ]

The bed setup. I had to stretch my frame 16 inches, then I moved the rear axle back about 10 inches to keep everything looking good (looked goofy with the axle in the usual place with the longer bed). I then welded 1/2 thick plate on each side of the extension, drilled 1 inch hole and pivot the bed on 1 inch, grade 8 bolts. The hoist is a grainmaster 5 ton unit that came as is, I just fabricated a 2X4 inch, heavy wall crossmember to fasten it to as the lower perch. It is attached to two 9 foot long pieces of 2X4 box as the rails for the bed. The bed had 4 inch C channel that slide in between the two rails. So 5 bolts per side and I can remove the flat bed from the rails if the need arises. I still have to get a new sending unit and mount the new front tank, hence the hanging fuel fill hose.

The stack are 3 inch stacks I bought from a TDS member (whitehorse). I bought header flanges and welded them to a 4 inch square tube that runs crossways on the truck. Then pointed one down for the inlet, two up for the stacks. I then made an X between them for support out of 1 x 1/8 steel strap, keeps the stacks from moving around. I can get some pictures. My exhaust is a 3 inch Y into a Summit welded muffler, into a stainless 6 inch flex joint, into a 90 that goes up into the bottom of the 4 inch square tube. The square tube then carries exhaust to each stack. Sounds great, functions great and my EGT's are way down since losing the whole 1 7/8 inch glass packed true duals. My EGT gauge starts at 400 and they don't even move until I start pulling a grade, normal driving on flat ground I may see 450, but usually they just sit on the lower stop. I have a dual gauge, reads left and right EGT's.

Re: The Mule truck as my friends have named it...

I must admit it sounds to be a very good set up and I would like if you could post some pics, that is if you don´t mind. I think I would like to do something along the same lines with my truck. I have an extended cab though and wonder if it would be to much stress on the frame if I streeched it some. i know about the wheel spacers for the rear wheels as I have tried to mount duals on it before.I have thought about moving the rearend back a few inches but it would make it´s already lousy steering radius worse lol. Heres an Idea I thought of to is putting a tag axle from one of those E350 busses under it to in front of the rear end if I streeched it. I use my truck to haul alot and figure it might help to have more brakes on the road. I am glad to see other poeple keeping these trucks going. In my opinion its cheaper to maintain these old beasts then to have massive payments on a new one.

Re: The Mule truck as my friends have named it...

Funny thing is, I have 6 F350 dually wheels. One is offset less than the others. If I had two of them for the inside DRW, I would have been fine. Unfortunately, I only had one and 5 of the deeper dish. The shallower dish worked fine, with good clearance and still maintained the minimum tire to tire clearance (space between the tires on the DRW setup) but just stuck in toward the springs less.

Re: The Mule truck as my friends have named it...

If you can find a Dodge or Ford Hi-Rail truck >> made to run on railroad << at a salvage yard, they have bolt-on spacers that will allow your wheels to clear the springs. They are about 2-1/2" and bolt to your studs and have their own studs for the wheels.

We used to have a salvage yard close that got a bunch of these and everybody in the country were putting duals on their 3/4 trucks.

These spacers are really well made and were meant to allow the tires to contact the rail-head to propel the truck.

Another source for spacers is the front of almost any 4x4 ton truck.

Spacer is a cuss word to a lot of people, but these bolt on solid and are plenty strong.

Re: The Mule truck as my friends have named it...

Not really looking to change them now, spent a small fortune on these heavy adapters. They have 8 nuts with studs that bolt the inside wheel to the hub, then an a very substantial adapter slides over them and is held in place by the outer wheel. The studs are VERY heavy and then are about doubled by the tubes welded into the spacer that slides over them. Suffice it to say, if they break, I would guess you were way overloaded anyway.

Very nice! I have always wanted one just like it. The flat dump bed
seems so handy to have, something that a guy would use and get work done with. Good job
