Still not starting. Replaced both batteries new today and it cranks much faster. The new symptom is an air noise coming from the intake on a timed basis.... like a psssssst then again in a few seconds with the pssssst. Is this what's attributing to the smoke coming out the intake? I fell kind of dumb asking but is this compression building and it might fire or is this a bad thing? Doesn't seem like it could be good. Bought the truck as non running for cheap so I really don't know what I'm getting into. Could there be a bad cylinder causing this or something? Thanks.
I would pull the valve covers and check around the valves to see if it all looked ok.

I will have to pull them this weekend. Got no shop to work in and man it's getting dark here by the time I get home! I'm waiting on a compression guage to do the check hopefully that will help narrow some of this down. Seems like bad valves or not enough compression to get this beast going. What should I look for with the covers off?
I would bar the engine over by hand and watch that the rockers all move like they should and that they don't keep tension on any of the rocker-arms when the valve is closed. Also that none of the springs are broken.
This would also be a good to bring the engine to TDC #1, then remove the oil-fill tube from the IP cover, you should see 3 bolts and a dowel on the back of the IP gear and the dowel should be at the 4 o'clock position. This is a check on the timing.
I don't have a shop either, but at least I'm a little farther south.
