oil disappearing from rearend

I keep having to add oil to the rear diff,
like a couple of cups every 1000km.
I can't see any visable signs of leaking,
could it be blowing out the vent tube?

Re: oil disappearing from rearend

A reasonable guess is that it leaking near the drive shaft and being spun, into 360degs. You just havn't noticed it.
Or it is leaking at the end of the axle, near the rear brake (right or left), and you will find it there.

What fluid are you put in?

Not likely, BUT if the vent tube is plugged then pressure pushes it past the axle seals into the brake drums........

Re: oil disappearing from rearend

I put in 80W90 gear oil,and some stuff called Lucas.
I have added quite a bit and there is
no sign of it leaking out by the brake drums.
Also the fuel tanks and the bottom of the box are not coated with oil
I pulled the vent tube down relocated it.
I think it is comming out there.
I can't figure why though.

Re: oil disappearing from rearend

Do remember the gear oil will go to the ends of the axle. When you filled it first time you may have stopped too soon and now the extra added has finally filled the void on the axle tubes.

Good point to remember is if you replace the gear oil check it after 20 miles with several turns left and right. You could just raise the axle on each side (use a curb) so the gear oil has time to move around and settle in the bearings and tubes.

Is this axle a limited slip, if so you need some LS additive 8ozs.
