Okay, she's running!

Thanks to everyone on here for pitching in with all your advice. Got her fired up finally and run it up to temp. There's a valve sticking though and it's loosing compression on that cylinder. When I run it up it seems to subside a little and when I really run it up I can flat hear the valve not seating and that answers my question to the whoosh. It settles back down to normal in about 4 or 5 strokes but my guess is that's whats making that cylinder sound a little funny yes? My question is what additive will help this? Now that's it running I want to change all fluids out and start the process of working this thing over. I grabbed a bottle of diesel kleen...what should I add to the oil to help revive things when I change it? Also what about the tranny fluid? Gear oil? Grease? Lots of work to do!

Only oil additive I would ever use would be Auto RX. Its not snake oil like most everything else. Auto-Rx Engine Cleaner Transmissions Motorcycles Stop Leaky Seals Oil Burning Increase MPG Better Gas Mileage Trouble Shifting ARX

Thanks for the link that looks like good stuff! I will try it but I want to double check here first if I should even be running this motor anymore with the valve acting funny and the thump in the cylinder. Is that valve causing a misfire and this thump? Since it acts up for a few seconds and then seems to seat back down somewhat would this be worth a try or could the valve just be bad?

If the valve is not seating the thump could be piston contact....... does it sound metal to metal...... normally in the above case severe engine damage is caused. I would advise open the valve covers and check for correct valve train operation...

It's not a metal sound no it sounds...like a low thump. It's loudest at idle, hard to hear at medium throttle and can't pick it up on rev. I am going to pull the valve cover today and check it out. Don't really know what to look for though on proper operation or sepcs...i don't think but maybe there's a feeler gauge out in the tool box somewhere.

Don't laugh!

here's a short clip of what I'm trying to describe....I have never sat and listened to a diesel motor and with this one sitting for so long have no idea what to expect. Thanks for lending your ears! Is this just diesel ping?

edit: here's a link instead YouTube - MOV02281

That a/c compressor sounds noisy. How does the truck run? Have you changed the fuel filter?

yeah I think it's the clutch fan making the noise...will have to get to work on the accessories and make sure everything is in order...have a few other things to get worked out yet. The fuel tank selector valve has been removed at some point and a ball valve plumbed in so the gas gauge isn't currently working...wouldn't you know it I was up the street telling the same story and it puttered out at the exact same time. Out of gas luckily I had put a splash in the rear tank which got me back down the street. I also noticed while underneath changing the rear U-joint today there was some leakage on the corner of the back tank...could have been me spilling or something else to look into either way.

Truck runs like a top so far. Spent the afternoon pulling a column from a parts truck and getting this one all back in shape and with a key and took it out for it's maiden voyage around the back lots. Gets right up with no hesitation or stalling what so ever. Hasn't leaked a fresh drop in the engine bay or on the ground so far. Did new fuel and oil filters and changed the oil...tranny fluid looks brand new still nice and clean and red. Will have to look at the brakes next, they feel a little soft for my liking.
