Hey everyone,
I just put a push button start on my 86' f350 because the ignition switch wasn't working any longer. I ran two wires to either side of the solenoid, and then to a doorbell type switch. After doing this it seems like there is a problem when I let my truck sit overnight and then go to start it again. IT seems like the battery isn't holding a charge. It might be coincidence, but I was curious if by putting the push button on there might be a slow draw on the battery now?
Thanks
If it is a true door-bell switch then it could be the problem. Unhook one of the wires from the switch for a day and see if the problem goes away.
New ignition switch is under $10 from the parts stores, why not just replace the bad one?

Why not just replace the the ignition switch with a new ten dollar part?
The horn button should be fine and not the drain on your electrical system in this problem. But it is a little flimsy for day to day use.
What about the other functions controlled by the ignition switch?
Are you getting all those in the right state when you shutdown?
Your ignition switch controls more than just spinning the starter.
If you don't get everything shutdown it will be like leaving the key on all the time and that will drain you batteries, or not energizing the the alternator field could cause the batteries to not charge. Just to mention a couple...

The glow plugs cycle fine, and then I use the switch. As far as i can tell things shut down fine but its a good point. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. How would I go about replacing the switch, is it the whole assembly that you insert the key into?
The ignition switch is under the dash and on-top of the column, about half-way between where the column meets the dash and the floor.
When I replaced mine it came with installation instructions. I also unbolted the column from the dash and just let it lay on the front seat, this made it easy to install the new switch. The switch was $8.99 from autozone 2 years ago. Buying the part first helps you see what you are replacing.
