screwy advance...

Hey guys...recently my pickup has been having trouble with the advance. I began to notice it when I didnt shift my pickup exactly right, you would hear a more disticnt harder rattle. I assumed that the advance was getting kind of sticky so i gave it a dose of Lucas injector lube, cleaner...a full bottle in a 1/4 tank, This doesnt bother me because it rarely happens, and it isnt very agressive...yet.

But, just within a week or so after the high idle/advance kicks off and I take off I will get about 3 miles down the road when the temp gauge is reading 120 or so and the truck will surge, and jolt and the advance comes on really hard core...it rattles like it is -10 degrees outside and I have just started it up...So to make it go away I will stick my foot into it a little and the rattle goes away and it drives fine w/o trouble like a normal warmed up pickup...Whats the deal? Is it the temp sender that tells the IP to advance itself? or what? Any ideas would be nice. I know I need to redo the pump, but I was wanting to hold off until next spring. I hope that I can get away with just switching out the sender...Thanks in advance.

Shawn

Re: screwy advance...

Sounds like the Governor Flex Ring is disintegrating. You can check by removing the 90* fitting on the IP and then the check valve under it, be careful with the oring. If there are black pieces in the check valve then the GFR is toast and you need a new IP. You could also put a clear line off the return 90* fitting and run the engine, collect the return fuel in a margerine tub and see if black specs are there.

Re: screwy advance...

I was under the impression that these pumps didnt use a flex ring and stuff anymore...I'm pretty sure that mine is the all one piece, new style weight carrier. I was told they havent used the flex ring setup for years. Any other ideas? Thanks.
