It just snowed here and I tried to put the truck in four wheel drive.
It worked last month.
I ruled out the hubs.
So what is the most likely thing wrong with my t-case?
2x4 works ok
no 4x4 lo or high,
sounds like it is engageing when I shift but the front drive shaft just spins with the hubs unlocked.
Thanks
T
HI Ya,BullHauler
Thanks for the reply!
With the hubs un-locked and case in 4-wheel,
I can still rotate the front shaft by hand,
I'll say that the rear diveshaft
does not turn freely
because the truck has
rear wheels driving
in any of the two or four/hi/lo scenarios.
What gives?
Before you go ripping that thing outa there, you should be sure that it's actually shifting.
You need to get underneath and follow the shift levers to the box, and make sure that when you move the lever, the arm on the t-case also moves with it.
If so, then sounds like something is haywire inside the T-case. Since it doesn't work in either low or high 4x4, then I'd suggest the 4x4 shift fork is not moving the gear forward to engage.
These things are real easy to work on y'self. It's not really complicated inside. You can pull the thing out in about 1 hour, and have it apart in about the same. I'd say don't be afraid to tackle it yourself if you don't need the truck immediately.
Your other choice would be to pick one up at the wrecker or out of the paper. I got one a couple years ago for $100, and swapped it in less than 3 hours start to finish.
I've got some pics of the inside of one if you need help with it....
Everything Ziggster40 said. Also, poke your nose up in there and make sure something hasn't got lodged in the linkage like a stone or dead cat or something.
Sometimes a sagging engine or transmission mount will change the geometry of the linkage and let it hit the floorboard before going far enough to shift.
I don't think you have a serious problem or you would have heard a big bang or crunch.
You people are so kind to respond,
I did opt for the used from wrecker route,
and did check all of the mentioned trouble shooting,
I never heard a bang or crunch,
It just didn't work one day.
It is out and on the floor,
It still does not shift, although
I did get it to shift once and
could not do it again.
I think it is the shift fork too.
Maybe one day I will look at it and
fix it and have a spare.
I would like to see the pics.
Thanks alot guys!

I've got a bunch of other pics of the inside of the thing, but here's the only one I got on my server for now. If you would like any others, please feel free to pm me, with an e mail addy, and I'll send you more pics.
