Trim - plastic inlay

Hi all,

I have decided that I will repair / improve the trim on my truck. I have the chrome trim about 2 1/2" wide, with a 2" black plastic inlay. I have three pieces that have seperated and fell off (taken off to prevent eventual loss). I would like to stick these pieces back into place and for them to stay "stuck on".

Have any of you repaired your trim this way, if so what adhesive did you use. I have used contact cement in the past, but it didn't last too long (on another vehicle). I need something that will perform well at low temperatures - I have just moved to central northern BC and it gets a wee bit chilly in the winter and I really would like the plastic to stay stuck to the trim metal backing.

Any pointers from you good folks would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

John

Re: Trim - plastic inlay

Just run down to your local body shop and spend $20 and have them do it, they have the proper adhesive.

Re: Trim - plastic inlay

If it's the factory trim you could try and locate some new fasteners that clip into the back of it. Usually auto paint supply stores or trim shops can get them.

If it is aftermarket stick-on style trim then I would look into 3M adhesive trim tape. It is a double-sided grey tape that comes in mulitple widths and sticks extremely well to any clean surface. May be easier and cleaner than goopy adhesives. Auto parts stores should have it and if they don't, the paint stores definately will.

If it's just the black rubber center part of the factory trim that is coming off I would use 3M trim adhesive. It comes in a metal tube and can be found at just about any NAPA store. It'll do the job.
