Has anyone ever entered their truck in the truck pulls? I considered doing it over the summer but wasn't sure if I should with an automatic tranny. Good idea or bad idea? You don't see a whole lot of diesels, especially old ones at the pulls. I'd be kind of curious to see how the old truck would do. Any tips from those who have pulled?
Thanks

Not to make anyone mad, but if you pull against a pretty much bone stock Cummins, you will lose unless you have some serious modifications. I would also assume a good Powerstroke serious competition. At our local pull, we have several guys show up with NA 6.9's and just can't even begin to compete. There is one guy there that has a 1 ton dually Cummins, he full pulls in the dually class every year. He has the pumped tuned but makes little to no black smoke, has slant cut stacks as well, so I would think if it were really cranked up it would be obvious, anyway, this year places 1-4 were Cummins, 5 a power stroke then like 6-12 Cummins, then a couple of old 6.9's, one turbo, one not! I remember all this cause my best friends son runs the pull and my best friend and I try to help him out scoring etc.
I had thought about entering my truck, but once I saw that, I figured why put that kind of pressure on the old girl just to get my tail kicked. Now in the modified class, there are a couple of 6.9's that do well, problem is, they have big bucks in them to get them better than a Cummins or Powerstroke and when those owners spend some big bucks well, there you are, getting your tail kicked again.

Check the rules of the pulling organizations. I have gone to local pulls where they let the NA Fords, without turbos, pull with the gas trucks. These were stock classes. I have had the itch with both of mine, but am afraid I will destroy something if I do. Give it a shot and have fun. Matt

Unfortunately, that is not the case at my local pull. Matter of fact, we have very few (none this year) gassers pulling in the stock class, might be the reason huh? Pulling against a turbo'ed diesel didn't sound appealing to them either. The gassers at that pull are all modified.

At our local pull, you have to have a 5000lb or better hitch, preferrably a receiver style, you then use a clevis and the pulling trailer hooks to the clevis via a very serious chain. In the stock classes, that is all that is needed. In the modified classes, they require a second safety chain and an cutt-off switch wired to the truck so if it gets more than about 4 feet from the trailer, it kills the motor. Just in case a truck runs away it will be shut down in short order.

we had one pull a couple months ago. not a professional pull though. just a pull for personal trucks, no high performance non-daily trucks were used. I got 6th of 12 trucks. 1st was a cummins HO, 2nd cummins HO, 3rd stock powerstroke, 4th stock poweerstroke, 5th turbo idi, 6th me, 7th turbo idi, 8th powerstroke, 9th 6.5 chevy, and the rest were a 6.9 and 6.5's. I think we pulled either a 5K or 7K gooseneck sled on fresh river sand...........Gibson

Huff's done a few. I plan on runnin the 85 if I ever get it back together. You will need to crank the rpms up to 4,000 plus to even get close to competing with the street mod guys. A 6.0 with just a box is 400+HP so your gonna need to dig up some HP from somewhere!
I would run mine in a pull but only with the driveline upto snuff and the propane workin some majic lol. There has got to be some potential in these IDI engines somewhere? Has anyone tried to buid one to make some seriuos HP? Yes! Ken (land_yaght) has build some 6.9's that make good power. He dyno'ed one about a year or so ago that laid down over 400HP. Don't recall the torque. His place is DPS Performance . He used these HO 6.9's in pulling trucks. If you want to make big numbers with an IDI, and use those ponies to pull competively, give Ken a call.
