water pump bolts loose, oil leak?

Stop the world I want off! Well, not really. I've been chasing an oil leak near the front of the engine for a while now. Thinking, headgasket, oil cooler etc. Have used brake cleaner to clean up front of engine and drove it a bit, oil leak still persists and I do have oil in the anifreeze.
I was thinking oil cooler as the culprit but today I got a surprise. I had done the waterpump this past summer and put on oh, maybe 500miles on the truck since. No coolant leaks, holds pressure etc but today I was lookin around and just put a 1/2 wrench on the waterpump bolts. Yikes! I got 1/2 to 3/4 turn on them all! I used sealant on the bolts needed and it was tight when it went on this summer. My questions are: if loose, will the waterpump allow oil into the coolant and an oil leak down the drivers side of the engine going onto the oil cooler then blowing back and down the face of the oil filter? Not talking a lot of oil, drops that just start to run after about 3 hours highway driving. Gents, your brain teaser for the day.

Yes,oil will leak from there if the bolts were loose.Yes you can get coolant into the oil from there also,if the bolts that require the sealant were loose. You may want to remove the bolts that require the sealant and re-do them with some more sealant, then re-torque all the bolts again.

Re: water pump bolts loose, oil leak?

First drain the antifreeze or it will pour into the oil pan....if the bolts are removed.

Gents:
Took it for a run last night and will crawl under this am when the wind stops. I guess the gasket must compress after install and need a tighten after a few miles. Sure hope this is it.

Re: water pump bolts loose, oil leak?

Well, no oil leaks. Yesterday's run was about 40 miles. Friday I'll do 3 hrs of highway and that will tell the tale. After thinking head gasket, oil cooler and on a van I was terrified at what it takes to do these things on the van! Man, I hope I got the cure.

Re: water pump bolts loose, oil leak?

Well, after a 3hr highway run 95% of the oil leak is gone. However due to the cleanup with the brake cleaner I do have oil weeping from both ends of the oil cooler tube and also at the oil cooler front casting to block seam. A drop of two at the casting seam and the cooler tube is just wet at both ends - no oil streaming out. I cleaned out the rad overflow tank before this run and now it has a slight oil rim around the edge of the coolant all around the inside of the over flow tank. Might be just the tail end of the oil leak that I fixed or maybe the cooler. I don't trust the cooler now and will do that when the warm weather comes. I also marked the coolant level in the overflow tank and noted the engine oil dipstick level, both did not change after this run. When does the fun start?
