water separator

Does the &.3 idi water separator / filter unit fit on the 6.9 with no modifications, what is the easiest kind of new water separator to install and have the filters be reasonably priced? what micron fuel filtration do our 6.9's need? Thanks

Re: water separator

yes you can use it. Even better though, is one of the aftermarket water/fuel filters that do not require the seperate bottom piece and fit the existing 6.9 filter head, such as the Baldwin BF1222.

Re: water separator

Better off using one of those CAV water separators found on farm tractors worldwide.I saw one of those on ebay and they do the job very well.

Re: water separator

thanks again for everything., I have an extra factory fuel water separator. Does anyone have a good thing to say about it? I want to try either mine or the extra. on the top there seems to be stamped in over one pipe with an arrow pointing to the other. in/out would be so much clearer. IS in the one with the arrowhead over it?

Re: water separator

Correct.

As for the factory water seperator, the design flaw is this. It has a rubber plug which seals from the inside out. There is no filter before this unit, and so all the crap settles down around the sides of the plug. When you pull the ring to drain it, some of the crap falls out, but a lot of it doesn't. Then when you let go of the ring, the plug captures dirt between itself and the surface it is to seal against, resulting in an air intrusion. As for its ability to catch water, it works fine.

Sorry, old post, but trying to find a replacement fuel filter w/built-in water separator for my 1987 6.9L. RACOR doesn't make them anymore and the Baldwin BF1222 is sized for the 7.3L header (1 inch) and not the 6.9L header (7/8 inch). Anyother options???? Thanks in advance.

2 micron for the final fuel filter. I use a 30 micron as a per-filter on my Racor unit and a 2 micron at the stock filter location.

Racor model 225 or model 445 will bolt on the firewall in place of the stock water separator. Filters for them are available in 2, 10, or 30 micron. Much more effective water separator unit than the stock 6.9 or 7.3 units. Plus it filters the fuel before the lift pump.

I just got done removing the factory fuel/water separator from the firewall of my 84 F250. I removed the assembly so I could service it, and I noticed that one of the PO's had repaired a hole in the cannister. I was also unable to spin the cannister off. I wound up crushing the cannister and tearing a hole in it. Through the hole I could see a crappy looking filter element. I replaced the entire unit with an AC primary filter head, part# G438957. I'm putting a Carquest 86418 spin on filter with a drain valve on it, rated at 12 microns. The only thing I wish I still had was the water-in-fuel sensor.

Hey guys The number for the AC filter head in my previous post is no good. I got the number right off the top of the head. Go figure. Anyway, I got the filterhead off of a GMC topkick truck.

I'm going through this right now on my 87 6.9. I already have a filter head so I've been matching Napa water seperators/filters to the head i have. So far I found a bunch with drains and 2 with a sensor port too. The problem is with the sensor port they get expensive, $46 for a Napagold 3604 with drain & sensor port @ 8 micron. My other option is a Napagold 3405 14 micron for $21. Half the price.
