My engine is going bad and I need to replace it. What is the cheapest way. I have been looking at buying a complete or wrecked truck to take it out of because I need a couple other parts such as a transfer case and maybe a turbo upgrade. I would then just put my old engine in the truck and sell it. I have also looked at buying a used engine and that has seemed like a pretty good way to do things. Being able to rebuild the engine would be very nice but I do not have another truck to drive when I rebuild the engine. If anyone has any other ideas it would be appreciated.

Would not be the 'cheapest' way, but I would buy another means of transportion, rebuild what I have (to my specs ), then sell the other transportation when my 'specs' are met.
I already have 4 trucks (3 6.9s) that I'm working on and all the 6.9s are operable. Gathering parts for a rebuild on my '86 4x4.
Another reason that i don't want to rebuild that I do not have the time. I go to school and work in the summer. I might be able to rebuild it next winter at school but I would like to put the new engine in the spring. I also do not plan on having the truck for more than 5 years and I do not put very many miles on it.

NAPA has a good kit(bearings gaskets ect) But your local rebuilder will probably be cheaper on pistons. I went through my 6.9 for $1900.00 not including injectors or pump. My labor of love was also for free to R&R and assembley. It does include crank turned , heads rebuilt and 1 sleeve installed. Problem I got now is if I sell the truck I would be selling the motor and giving them the truck for free to carry it around in.

bad idea.
firstly, U-haul does mark the motors, I used to have to record the numbers when they showed up at my machine shop. There's a couple of obvious tags and a couple of hidden ones.
secondly, with them watching closely over the motors, they obviously prosecute on a felony of that nature.
suggestion.....
buy a wadded up truck with a running motor, they are still around but getting harder to find. Don't know where you're at, but if you hit the online classifieds or the equipment auctions, you should be able to come up with a truck for less than $2k. I know of one in Watsonville, CA today that the guy wants 1k for the truck and its about as ugly as sin but runs great.

The honest answer seems to me to be "buy a motor with a truck still around it". It's been my observation that removed motors are worth more than ones in a truck. I guess that's because some people don't want to mess with parting out the hulk. I bought one that a tree had fell on for $600. I don't see you getting a running motor much cheaper than that. Check the for sale pages here.
I have an 84 F25 where I ended up on three occasions to weld the famous crack near the heat plug connection. The last time it leaked after installation that I decided to get an engine from a wrecker. I shopped around and came up with one, but as it turned out it was seized.
I contacted this forum and waqs told to purchase of a whole truck, possible an 87 model. I found in short order one advertised here. I had to fly to Tuscon, bought the truck after a short test drive and paid $2K. I drove it to SoCal and on a couple of weeks later to Mexico B.C.S., where my 84 was parked. It took 2 days for the removal and re-installation with the help of the local mechanic, another $200 and the truck runs like a champ. The new engine has more UMPF, and I ended up with lots of spares, including a nearly new, overhauled Transmission.
I'm glad I found this forum and followed the advise provided.
I have one out of an 85, not sure if it is the new model or not. It has low mileage but was owned and used by a local oil company. It came out of a 1985 that had 88,000 on the clock and I was assured by one of the guys who maintained them that it only had that many miles. The truck was scrapped as it sat and rusted most of the time. I have no idea HOW it was used, I brought it home, started it, and then cut the truck from around it. I planned on keeping it just as a spare, but figure if I ever do anything with the engine in the 87, I will rebuild it as it has some improved parts and I don't have to drive my truck daily. Not sure where you are or if this motor has the later casting that is not proned to cracking, been meaning to check that out. I have the Injection pump on my 87, but have a rebuilt one to replace it and planned to put the pump back on it, of course it would need timed after doing so. I also have the T19 and transfer case. PM me if you would like.

Just check wreckingyards. Nothing is going to be cheap unless you throw a gas engine in it. One thing I learned the hard way nothing is cheap on a diesel.
I bought the one in my truck at a pick n pull yard on half price day. Got it complete starter a/c compresor everything for $80. Bought it just for parts but when the motor in my truck let go I tossed it in and it runs great. It came out of a wrecked local company truck whos maintence shop is usually above par.
