hey guys i just put my winch bumper and winch on my 85 f-250 (pics up shortly) but i'm not sure if my attachment method is going to be strong enough. i drilled four 1/2" holes on side of frame but i'm afraid it isn't going to be enough to hold it on. does anyone have any ideas as to how to make it stronger or is four 1/2" bolt's going to be strong enough to hold on bumper without front 4" of frame off?

Add another 1/2" hole on each side, as many Class III bumper-pull hitches are attached to the frame rails with six 1/2" bolts (three per side) so if that's good for a big trailer it should work for your winch as well. If you feel like overbuilding it (and I definitely would in your case) make them four 1/2" bolts per side, that will hold for sure. Just as a comparison, my rear Class IV bumper/hitch is held to the frame rails with three 5/8" bolts per side.
my only problem is that i don't have much room cause the little rivet things holding on the spring shakle prevent me from running a longer piece of iron so i only have maybe the front 4 inches of frame holding bumper on

When I built my bumper for my 84 truck all I did was pop a hole where the rivet was and extended the piece of steel for mounting back a little further.
I would expect the 4 half-inch grade 8s to hold whatever you pull out or pull your truck into, without hurting the frame. But that opinion comes from years of pulling stuff and not much scientific research. About the only thing I would not try with those 4 bolts would be a straight vertical lift of the truck.

According to the following chart, 1/2" Grade 8 bolts will shear at 17,870 lbs.
So ahead with that vertical lift; the bumper will probably buckle or the winch pop off long before the four bumper mount bolts fail. What bolts are holding the winch to the bumper- could that be the weakest link? ROCKCRAWLER.com - Grade 5 vs. Grade 8 Fasteners
