1997 Jayco 3430 RKS and my 05 F250 CC 4x4 ?

Does anyone know anything about the pin weight on this trailer? I am going to make an offer conditional on it not exceeding GVWR.

My truck, with a pickup longbed trash trailer in tow and 1 passenger, was 8,300 at the dump. I haven't hit a CAT scale yet.

The salesguy said GVWR of this trailer is 12,xxx ? I'll call for more detail.

Also, anyone tow a 5-er with the extension to the ball instead of a kingpin hitch? Thoughts?

You will exceed the GVWR of your tow vehicle.

Assume 18 percent kingpin weight. So if the trailer has a GVWR of 12,000 pounds, the hitch weight is going to be around 2,160 pounds.

8,800 pounds GVWR of your tow vehicle minus 2,000 pounds minimum kingpin weight = 6,800 pounds is the most your tow vehicle could weigh before you hook up to the trailer. Your wet and loaded tow vehicle is going to weigh a lot more than 6,800, and the pin weight will probably be a lot more than 2,000 pounds. So you'll be way overweight.

My 5er grosses 8,000 pounds when on the road. And the result is a GVW on the 4 pickup wheels of 9,200 to 9,400 pounds. So I'm overloaded a little bit. But you'll be overloaded a lot more.

Terrible idea. More than 2,000 pounds hitch weight on the ball way back behind the rear axle? Disaster waiting to happen. Overloaded is bad enough, but overloaded with the kingpin behind the rear axle would be stupidity in action.

Truck's GVWR is 10k, not 8,800.

I've called and he's trying to get pin weight, dry weight and actual gross weight for me now.

By "the ball" I mean a gooseneck ball in the bed. A friend tow's his 5-er with it and an extension to the kingpin. I was curious what others had experienced.

Re: 1997 Jayco 3430 RKS and my 05 F250 CC 4x4 ?

CALL BACK!

Specs:

GVWR on trailer 12,200
Pin weight: 1480
Dry weight: 10,010

I spoke to him and said I'd be interested conditional on my truck having enough payload for the trailer within the GVWR of 10k.

It works, if done right. But most trailer manufacturers will void the warranty on a 5er if you convert the kingpin to a gooseneck. The frame of the trailer is not engineered to take the increased leverage of the gooseneck conversion.

If it were mine, I'd take the trailer to a cracker-jack welding shop and have them strengthen the frame under the overhang around the kingpin box (pin box). Then be sure the gooseneck converter is a good 'un. Colibert? But those puppies cost around $400 to $500. http://kearbey.homestead.com/fwextensions.html

For just a hair more you could buy a Reese 16k 4-way 5er hitch, without having to worry about breaking your trailer frame.

GVWR on trailer 12,200
Pin weight: 1480
Dry weight: 10,010

Dry weights are meaningless. Assume the wet and loaded trailer will gross close to the GVWR, or about 12,000 pounds. And the wet and loaded hitch weight will be around 17 to 18 percent of gross trailer weight.

So if you can keep the weight of the wet and loaded tow vehicle down to 8,000 pounds, the 2,000 pounds hitch weight is reasonable, and you'll be right on the GVWR of the tow vehicle.

Of course, if you hook up the empty trainer on your empty F-250 while at the trailer dealer, you'll not be even close to the GVWR of the tow vehicle. But that's a fool's test. If you want a meaningful test, then get the pickup and trailer loaded for a long trip, including passengers, pets, fresh water, food, cooking utinsels, propane tanks full, fuel tank full, floor jack and plywood jack pad in the bed, tool box and coolers full of the normal stuff, etc. Then hit the CAT scale and see where you stand. If you're only a little over, then throw out some tools, fluids, maybe the floor jack, and weigh again.

Of course, if it's mine, I'm not going anywhere without a 3.5-ton floor jack. One flat on the trailer during a rainstorm with you on your back in a muddy barrow ditch should tell you why.

Re: 1997 Jayco 3430 RKS and my 05 F250 CC 4x4 ?

I was slightly over the GVW with my 2000 F-250 and my "LISTED" 29.5 foot trailer which is really 31'10" long.

You can not trust the dealer's report of weights. A scale is the only thing you can trust.

I upgraded to my current dually 'cause I was not happy towing my 5'ver with an F-250. You may be happy, but you, IMO, will not be legal.
