2000 6spd 7.3 Towing Mileage

Considering a 2000 DRW 7.3L 6spd with 4:10 ...anyone out there that can give me some idea of the mileage to expect towing a horse trailer of around 10K lbs.

Thanks

Sounds like I have a pretty similar rig to what you are considering and towed a similar load, 4H w/weekender LQ, never rolled over the scales with it, but 6700 lb empty, so between the three horses and tack I would say about 10k. Although I never burned through a tank with trailer, I would say it was averaging about 12-13mpg towing to various barrel races around Reno. I base that on getting a real consistent 16-17 mpg empty, last tank was 16.88 mpg. I can't give any current numbers with that trailer as it was sold in favor of a stock combo. Hauled it real nice, set the cruise and the truck never slowed on the hills. Never got a chance to drag it up Donner Pass though I'm sure it would have been fine. Although I will admit I do drive to conserve fuel.

I am not a dually, nor do I have 4.10's or a crew cab....but I do have a 7.3L with a 6 speed, and towing a 28ft enclosed trailer with a toyota pickup in it, some spare tires, tool and parts the trailer is sitting right around 10K and I get 13 mpg's ish towing around Northern Cal. About 16-17 empty...

At 10K you can get 12 maybe a little more with a light foot.

Anything heaver than that and you are set for 10 or below.

My truck (in sig) got 10-11 pulling anything from 7k to 15k lbs, without the chip and injectors. That was based on nearly 100k miles of driving and towing up to 2/3rds of the time. I like to drive the speed limit when loaded and 6-8 mph over when empty (max 78 mph). Empty at those speeds avg'd 15 mpg and up to 18.5 mpg if I slowed down to 60 and drove 'smartly' (read: not very often!!).

I'm pretty sure I get better towing mpg's now and I'm towing a 10k lb 5ver all over the country for work. I cannot quantify my milage now, because I do not accurately measure the fuel (SVO and biodiesel) I put in my truck. (I have gone as far as 5,400 miles on one (30ish gals) tank full of diesel)

Towing Mileage

We tow a 36 foot triple slide 5th wheel weighing 15K with a 99 F350 CC Dually w/4:10 and ZF6, 227,000 miles. We have towed most of the interstate system east of the Mississippi and easily average 10 plus mpg. The "sweat spot" with this combination is 2000/2200 RPM in 6th gear on level ground, long grades, i.e. MT Airy, NC is 2000/2200 RPM in 5th gear.

Airfooter, are you sure you didn't mean 540 miles? Or is it because you also had a tank (or tanks) of bio-fuel that you were burnin in addition to the diesel? 5400 mile/ 40 gals = 135 mpg ???????????
If you really got that kind of mileage burning diesel, while hauling a trailer, then I think the Ford engineers may just want to talk to you.

It is all about drag and not so much weight. You will do better with a horse trailer that you will with a 5er. I get 9.5-10.5 with the 5er. Guys I've talked to with horse trailers seem to do better than 12.

It was still 10-12mpg overall, I put SVO in a different tank. 5,400 miles was how long it took to use a whole tank of diesel. I only consume diesel when I start up and shut down. 7 - 10 miles of burning diesel and I can drive ALL day w/o using another drop. That trip was GA to SoCal and back.
