I am looking for a truck to pull my 5er with. I have found a 2001 F450 as follows:
2001 Ford F-450 Super Duty Lariat, 4X2 Crew Cab, Dually, 7.3 Power Stroke Turbo Diesel, Leather Captain Chair front seats with center console. All power (seats, windows and locks). NEW BRAKES and HD AUTO TRANS. Original Alcoa aluminum wheels with nearly new tires on them. Size is 19.5"
Custom "CLASSIC TRAVELER" conversion by FONTAINE. This includes fiberglass sides and gate, lighted step pads, couputerized air ride suspension (with dump valve) and Pullrite fifth wheel system.
This truck is super clean and drives and looks the very best. Non smoker driven, serviced regularly, very low miles for the model and has the RELIABLE 7.3 POWER STROKE TURBO DIESEL ENGINE
They are asking 18,500. I have been looking for information to see what I should offer or if this is a good price and have not had any luck finding that information. Does this seem like a fair price? Is there anything in particular I need to check when I inspect this truck?

DP 80econ -Stuck there for now because someone stole my SCT box
2 Optima Red Tops

1987 Mustang GT Cobra Clone- crate motor, cage and more suspension than I know what to do with
Loves to run down Vettes and Vipers on the road course
When new, that was the best of the best, and they cost way up there too - over $70,000. Expect to pay a premuim for that Fontaine conversion with the air-ride suspension. If the PullRite SuperGlide 5er hitch is included, that's a $3,000 option right there.
I don't have any idea what the market value would be for a truck that nice, but If I had a big 5er or LQ, I'd really try hard to buy that one.

My Sierra Blanca in the sig pic was a great pickup for 11.5 years. I sold it last year. Replacement is a 2012 F-150 EcoBoost SuperCrew Lariat.
Paid 17,000 for the truck in my profile/signature last May, had 126,000 miles on it . Looks to me like that's a steal, only that much for that truck. I had to put my own 5er hitch on, another $850 .

You might want to call your insurance company to make sure they will cover it. A lot of them won't cover them because they are considered commercial. Maybe you have a business?
I would move a mountain to buy that truck if I were you.
Sounds to me like it is totally set up as RV puller and has been well taken care of.
The transmissions in the 01 models were problematic....primarily because of a "mechanical diode" problem that affected the early models in the year. Maybe that problem has already been addressed by the previous owner but even if it hasn't.....a custom built, heavy duty transmission would make that truck a "lifetime" truck that would serve you well for any later RV purchase.
JMHO
on edit: There are several insurance companies...GMA and Progressive for instance... will insure the truck as they are accustomed to dealing with heavier RV pullers.

I called my insurance company, Erie, and they will insure it as a pickup. The rate is almost the same as my 97 Dodge 2500 CTD that I currently drive so that is good. I also called about tags and in TN I have to put a J2 tag on it which is a 16k pound tag but is still not commercial. It is only 41.00 per year instead of 24.00 per year so that is also good. Now I just have to decide if I want to bite the bullet and buy it. My brother has a 2000 F350 w/ 7.3 and he has had good luck with it with the exception of some front end problems.
Looks like an awesome truck. I would go for it. My Dad has an f450 for sale in KY if that falls through. It is an XL model with around 50k miles. It has a flatbed on it. It is a standard transmission with 4wd. Good luck!
I have a 2000 F550 with the Fontaine conversion, all the bells and whistles.
I pul a 48' LQ race car trailer with it it tows it with power to spare.
The only drawback is the fuel mileage. They have the full floating 13.5 (I think) dana rear end. With a 4.88 gear ratio. The only way I can get 10 mpgs towing is to keep it under 50 mph. At 65-70 it gets 7 mpg towing.
Now that diesl is down a bit it won't hurt as much.

I decided not to get this truck. I found another one that I liked better. Thanks for all the replies. The amount of information I got about this truck really amazed me.

Just hafta know.......what did you "find" that you like better than a fully equipped, fully set up, low mileage, well maintained, and fairly priced 7.3 liter F450 PSD. They don't come any "better" than that.....unless of course.....you consider a similar F550.

04 Dodge CTD 3500 DRW 4X4. It has leather like the 450 but the seats are heated and the passenger seat is power also. It already has the B&W turnover hitch installed. 305hp HO engine. If I could afford to have a truck to just pull my 5er I would have gotten the 450, but, I have to drive it to work every day. I went back and forth several times and I'm sure the wife was getting tired of me changing my mind.
Don't need to go second guessing the decision made.
