2004 trailer plug on a 2001

Just a heads up to anyone who thinks they have to have the 4prong plug attached. They plug in the same but the wires are in different places. I put the 04 plug on a few months back but hadn't towed since, Well the other night, in the dark and in the mud off course, I hooked to a trailer. NO LIGHTS.
I thought the trailer lights were bad, hooked my brothers F250 to it and lights work. Well I didn't have to far to go so Off I went home.
Yesterday I got out the test light and checked the plug,NO POWER. I unhooked the harness and checked the truck end, POWER.??????????????
I started looking at the wires and reading the scematic on the plug, and traced the wires. What do you know that all the wires were in a different spot, some not even close. So I finally cut the harnes and wired the plug straight.
My question is ............Did I get a bad plug or did FORD change the scematic after 01?

Oh well it works now .....just no quick disonnect harness now.

Re: 2004 trailer plug on a 2001

Yeah, I figured out that one the hard way. I bought the truck in my sig used and it didn't have the factory harness on the bumper. I found one off of a 05 bumper and plugged it in. No lights on my TT. The wiring was completely changed around. I ended up with my test light and running back and forth and matched up the wires. I cut the plugs off both ends where the harness plugs into the truck harness and hard wired the whole show with heat shrink crimp on connectors. Works great now! Re: 2004 trailer plug on a 2001

Same here. When I swapped bumpers from my '00 X to our '04 the 7 pin didn't work either as I just disconnected the harness rather than remove the plug from the bumper. When I tried to pull my camper there were no lights and when I hit the brakes they locked up. Found that the pinout on the trailer plug is the same but the pinout at the square connector at the frame was different.

$65 mistake.

Yea I forgot to metion that I bought mine on Ebay so the money was spent. Thats why I just hardwired it to work. Not a big deal and I don't plan on having to remove the plug anyway.
