2008 Trailer Wiring connector does not allow use of both

Just found out on the 2008 SD, if you use the 7-pin wiring connector you can not open the 4-pin connecter cover enough to insert a plug there. Found out the hard way when I plugged in my camper and then needed to hookup the boat.

Was thinking maybe I could retrofit the plug with a 2007 SD style since they allow you to use both. Has anyone found a good solution that allows both to be used with totally rewiring with aftermarket plugs. Thanks for the info.

Why do you need both at the same time??
I haven't taken a good look at the 2008's but if they have a 7 pin bargman rv style plug you can rotate them in the bracket most of the time.....

I think he is doing something like... Big camper in the bed and using the 7 way to power it and then hooking his boat to the hitch or doing a double trailer load, as in, camper off the hitch then the boat off a hitch of the camper.

Re: 2008 Trailer Wiring connector does not allow use of both

Steve F.. Yep that's it. I use the 7-pin for the camper and run an extension on the 4-pin to the boat. What happens is if the 7-pin is used the cover flap goes past center to keep the flap on the 4-pin from opening. Going to check if a 2007 connector will work since I think the flap opens up so it doesn't block the 4-pin connector.

Course this has to wait since I just learn the middle daughter is about to deliver grandson #3. Looks like I won't be camping or using the boat anytime soon. More deckhands!

get rid of the 4 pin cover and leave only the 7 pin cover on it.

Re: 2008 Trailer Wiring connector does not allow use of both

Good for you on the new one... One of my girls has made me a grandpa x2 and I am only going on 42 (yes mom and I were very young).

I wish I could help you on the plug, I just don't have the truck to play around with (but Yes I have seen the plug "covers") and I know you do not wont to splice into wires.

My fast thought is this... Why not make a plug that is jumped off the camper male plug? Meaning, get yourself the "truck side" of the 4 pin connector and connect the wires of that plug into your 7 pin of the camper, this way you would have a pig tail coming off of the camper male plug for your boat. I would have to assume there would be no extra volt load on the truck side because I would think the 7 and 4 pin truck plug is wired together at some point under the truck.

EDIT... wow had to fix some typos.

Pollack makes a pig tail that plugs into the back of the 7 pin and tees off into the bed. they even come with the end that you do not have any splices and will plug into the back of 07 or earlier plugs.
