usually the gear lever on older boxes is held in by the cap on gearlever ball. The trans cover has two pins jutting into the shifter hole and the cap retains a spring and has two slots in it that comprise what I would call an inverted bulb socket arrangement.
A bulb socket has theese two slots and the bulb has the pins on its base. the cap has the slots and the gearbox top has the pins.
You push down and twist to remove and install it the same way.
