5th Wheel Hitch Installation - Short Bed

I've installed an RBW 5th wheel hitch in a short bed f250. The kingpin will be 1.5" ahead of axle. Seems the rule is to have the kingpin directly over rear axle for a shortbed. Did I screw up and should I remount so it is centered exactly over rear axle? I know about the cab clearance issue, is the 1.5" a "critical" loss of clearance? Thanks

Re: 5th Wheel Hitch Installation - Short Bed

I don't think you will have a problem..but as you stated "you are aware of the cab/trailer clearance issues". I have a Reese 16K installed in my SWB '05 F250..but I did opt for a slider hitch to keep me out of trouble..haven't had to use it though..just insurance I guess Mine is also about 1.0" to 1.5" in front of the rear axle so you should be OK there too. Just be careful and watch your clearances while backing...mine gets close but no contact

BTW: there is a thread on the active forums about mounting a 5r hitch in SWB trucks..might want to read member's post on the subject.

Here's the thread:

Re: 5th Wheel Hitch Installation - Short Bed

I actually mounted my hitch a few inches behind the axle for better clearance. I know this sounds wrong to some people, but it works for me. Never had any type of swaying, even towing double.
