Re: 5th wheel horse trailer

my thoughts are by the time you get a trailer with a 5th wheel setup on it you would have more than exceeded the cost of a gooseneck hitch for your 5er rails. I personally have seen 1 small stock trailer with a 5th wheel setup that was custom built. And I have seen a lot of trailers.

Re: 5th wheel horse trailer

Ditto on Dually's post. If anyone makes a 5th wheel horse, they are rarer than hen's teeth, which means you'll pay a pretty penny to avoid the relatively nominal cost of installing a goose hitch. As in my and Dually's sigs, gooseneck horse trailers are very popular. You might check horsetrailerworld.com, which I believe has the widest reach of any horsetrailer site, but I doubt you'll find a 5th wheel horse. Most here swear by the B&W turnover ball, which I have and vouch for [it has a nice, if expensive, 5th Wheel attachment, too]

Re: 5th wheel horse trailer

I found this with a yahoo search
http://www.pinemeadowfarms.com/Hitch_Adapters
you remove the bottom half of the gooseneck tube on the trailer and insert the kingpin unit.
I have a RBW fifthwheel hitch and a gooseneck ball plate that I interchange but it requires swapping out the two on the bedrails which is what you are wanting to avoid.

Re: 5th wheel horse trailer

I'm going to put one of the 5th wheel adapters on my new trailer...... mainly because it's going to be one heavy sucker, but also because I'm going to get an air-ride hitch so the trailer doesn't get beat up.

Re: 5th wheel horse trailer

I see that maybe he doesn't want to change the hitch everytime he pulls a different trailer. Those fifth wheel hitches aren't exactly light weight. It makes perfect sense to me to change the goose to a king pin and it shouldn't cost much to do. Most trailer builders will install the king pin adapter instead of the goose if you request it.

Just recently I saw a wedge car trailer sitting in a lot that had a king pin in place of the goose.

Re: 5th wheel horse trailer

Unless your truck is super low I don't think you could get away with this on a torsion (SP) axle horse trailer. I know even with the goose neck coupler all the was retracted up into the down tube the trailer still sits about 1" to high in the front. Not a big deal until you start thinking about the extra 18" that the 5er hitch in the bed of the truck is going to add to your pin height. Not saying its impossible just going to be a major expense and undertaking. I think it would be much less hassle to just convert the 5er to gooseneck. A Lot less hassle there.

Just my $0.02

Re: 5th wheel horse trailer

I always thought the reason horse trailers had a GN type hitch was because the trailer is going "off road" ie., into pastures etc and needed to be able to tilt side to side a lot more than a 5th wheel trailer which has limited range of motion for on road stability. You might consider a B&W turnover GN hitch pin and can accommodate a companion 5th wheel type RV hitch.

Re: 5th wheel horse trailer

Dualie's right, I've seen one converted for the same reason as you are wanting to do, and the outer tube on the trailer has to be either trimmed quite a bit, or even cut loose from the frame and raised up higher. The above one I looked at had it sticking up into the tack compartment.

That was my understanding. Even though the newer more expensive 5th wheel hitches have a way to tilt side to side, not nearly as far as a gooseneck but there is SOME side to side movent. That and the fact that a gooseneck ball leaves the bed mostly wide open. making it easier to haul hay, a bike, wheelbarrow, really anything you need to with out having a Hugh Jazz 5er hitch in the way of ANYTHING you want to put in your bed

Re: 5th wheel horse trailer

thanks for the responses guys. i will probably just get the adaptor for the bed rails and use a GN.i was trying to find the most economical way to get this done. the girlfriends daughter just got a horse (arabian) (yes the daughter is ecstatic right now) and we also lease a horse that needs to be moved to the new barn to be with the arabian. GF and daughter want to ride in a few of the local competitions and do a few trail rides and i was trying to find the best way to do it. looks like we will be looking for a 3 horse slant load, maybe with living quarters. lots of $$$$$ for a few hauls. the barn has a rental unit, but its usually spoken for. anyone got a wrecked trailer that is repairable they want to unload cheap??

Re: 5th wheel horse trailer

Welcome to the horse world! A gooseneck is a better ride for the horses than a bumper pull, far more popular with the horsey set - but you'll find that demand means that used gooses [esp. all-aluminums, but really anything other than a goose stock trailer] will cost you much more than a comparable [e.g., 3 horse slant load] bumper pull. check horsetrailerworld.com; horsecity.com; and your local horse groups newsletters. Adding an LQ ups the ante even more! If you are trying to keep your costs down, and bumper pull, 2 or 3 horse slant load, w/o LQ, will more likely present bargains ....
