6 degree grade?

Went over Monteagle in Tennesee (6 degree grade) last week. Total cgvw about 32,000. Rig handled it fine both up and down

Probably six percent, but with that truck, who's counting?

Your next assignment is the Grapevine (I-5 north of L.A.)

Can anyone give a quick understanding of the difference between degrees grade and percent grade. The part I think I understand so far is that a 100% grade is the same as a 45 degree grade so then it would seem that a 50% grade would be a 22.5 degree grade and a 25% grade would be 11.25 degrees. I looked it up one time, but found I would need someone to interpret what was presented.

A 6% grade means the pavement rises 6 feet every 100 feet, or 6 yards every hundred yards, take your pick. Never been back east (thankfully) but most all highway departments in the western states post grades by percent, not degrees. 6% is the most common. Don't know how that works out in degrees, been a long time since any math classes.

Table

1% = 0.6 degrees
2% = 1.1 degrees
3% = 1.7 degrees
4% = 2.3 degrees
5% = 2.9 degrees
6% = 3.4 degrees
100% = 45.0 degrees

What speed did you crest the hill at, and which direction were you headed?

55 mph in 3rd gear going west 45 mph in 3rd gear going east. East bound was harder up and down.

Monteagle is a piece of cake, tougher going east due to the turns at the beginning. Black mountain in NC on I40 is tougher. US 12 in WY has some very steep grades west of Sheridan. The western states have some "real" humps to climb. They will really check your torque.

Nothing quite like a 32% grade to keep you on your toes.
