96 PSD Towing!

Just a quick question guys,, I have a 1996 PSD with a 5 speed transmission that has a 410 in it. When I go to pull my camper that weighs around 5000lbs,,, Is it OK to pull in 5th gear. The reason I ask is because in the past I have always had a higher geared truck with an automatic. Opinions?????

Re: 96 PSD Towing!

Not a problem to tow in fifth, 5000 lbs is not that much of a load for your truck.

Keep an ear to the engine, don't let it lug - drop a gear if you need to. If you have an exhaust temp gauge use it to determine when to downshift as well.

Re: 96 PSD Towing!

I have 3.55 rear and tow in 5th all the time loaded up to 20k. Pretty flat here though.

Re: 96 PSD Towing!

I have exactly the same question you do. The owners manual indicates not to tow in 5th gear with the standard transmission. I asked several questions of various people on this subject, including a Ford truck service manager, and am wondering if I got "bad dope."
I was told the reason you can't tow in 5th. gear is "not an issue of lugging the engine," but a mechanical question with the physical strength of the OD gear itself. I was told the gear itself because of its size isn't as strong as the other gears. The Ford service manager told me you probably could "get by" on the flat without acceleration.
Have I been fed a line of "bull?" I have towed in fifth gear with light loads, like 5000-6000 pounds. But with my 5ver. that weighs a little over 10,000 pounds, I have been towing only in 4th. Have I been towing in fourth all this time because of bad info? So if it is only an issue of lugging the engine, why does the owners manual say you can tow in OD with an auto., but not manual? Maybe they are assuming "not knowing when to downshift" is an issue?
