Re: all four kenda 5th wheel tires blew up and melted
Don't know the brand.
I lost one Goodyear Wrangler that came from the manufacturer on my fifth wheel due to tread seperation. I suspect because of low inflation due to leak at cheapo high pressure valve stem.
I had two others lose pressure due to the cheapo stems that came from the manufacturer.
I replaced all with nice looking quality bolt in high pressure valve stems. End of that problem so far.
Check the condition and pressure of your RV tires at every fillup or stop. Get one of the infrared remote handheld heat sensors. It will let you know of hot tires and possible low pressure or other problems quickly and conviently. Don't keep tires past three years even if they look good.
Some reccomend five years. Look on the sidewall for manufacture date. Old tires are not safe in high load conditions.
When you replace the tires get tires that are rated at a greater load than came from the factory. The manufacturer only puts on enough tire to get the towable RVs out the door. They don't consider the added weight of water, clothes, food, and a million items we take camping with us. Also notice the manufacturers invariably do not balance the wheel assemblies from the factory. Two ounces or so out of balance on four or six tires can really loosen things up( screws, fasteners and fittings) and move things about in the RV.
Torque the lug nuts once at mounting and again after a few miles and every time you head out. If you don't have shocks on the RV and many don't, kits to install them are not really that expensive. They can save a lot of wear and tear with a smoother ride.
I'm not a know it all. Just a few lessons I learned the hard way.
Good RVing.

Re: all four kenda 5th wheel tires blew up and melted
I'll third that!! Carlisle tires are POS. I hit a minor bump on the highway and started getting a bad vibration. I pulled over and 3 of the 4 tires had pieces of tread coming off. I put on goodyears before summer and have not had one problem. There should be a class action suit against Carlisle tires.

Re: all four kenda 5th wheel tires blew up and melted
All of this anti Carlisle discussion got me to thinking. Just what brand of tired did I buy in Richfield, UT?
I blew an old tire just south of Beaver, UT on my way to CO, so I had the WalMart in Richfield replace all of them (Jayco TT). Just went out to check, adn sure enough they are the Carlisle's. So far so good, but I am going to take them to WalMart so they can balance them. I am hoping that by balancing I can get a few more miles out of POS tires.
I have some off brand tire on my Charmac. I have had them for a while and they are still fine. I got them from Superior Tire (Goodyear shop) here in LV, NV. I know that even though the tread is still ok, I am looking at new tires on the Charmac soon. No Carlisle's for the Charmac though.

Re: all four kenda 5th wheel tires blew up and melted
Just traded my Trailite with Carlisles for a Cougar with Marathons (I think). Had 3 flats on the Carlisles in 2 years and they were wearing down quickly. No blowouts but no sense of security either. I am in the process of looking for 80lb (10PR) 225/75/15 's just in case the new ones act up!
On another matter I was thru and stayed the night at Beaver Utah in July 99. Absolutely the nicest people I met on the whole trip especially the owner and staff at the big grocery store on the main street. You know the treatment was extra special when we remember it and comment on it 6 years later. Never pass up a chance to talk up good experiences as i like to complain sometimes too.

Re: all four kenda 5th wheel tires blew up and melted
I had Goodyear Marathons on my 96 Holiday Rambler, and blew three of them on a trip. Replaced them with some Chinese things because that's what the Goodyear dealer where I was had in stock. Blew two of them about 2 months ago. These tires were all 225/75R15 load range D's.
I decided to replace all tires with 16" LT 10 ply load range E tires. I went with 225/75-16 BFG Commericals. I would have gone with 285's or 245's for a higher load rating, but they wouldn't fit in the wheel wells.
My take on Goodyear is that they are a lousy company that has no regard for customer satisfaction. I complained about the goodyear tires, and got a letter from goodyear stating that they were the largest tire manufacturer in the world, and that they weren't too concerned about my problem with their tires.
Re: all four kenda 5th wheel tires blew up and melted
Groveite,
In my quest for better trailer tires I found that Denman and Titan both make a 15" load range E tire rated for 80PSI.
After reading a lot of posts at the RV.net site I decided that I would be better off with a change to 16" LT tires. The tires were very little more expensive that the 15" 10 plys, so all I was out was the price of 5 rims. Found them with a 3,000 pound 80psi rating for 42.00 each. They are made by Allied Wheel and look just like the wheels that are on most RV's.
Re: all four kenda 5th wheel tires blew up and melted
I will have to check to see if they will fit on the new Cougar. I agree that that would be the ideal solution. Higher weight rating and fewer RPM's. No matter how you cut it 10PR tires should be more dependable than 8PR tires even in the same size. Tread wear has never been a concern as I've never worn out trailer tires and only average maybe 7000 miles per year. They are suspect ,in my opinion , when they are more than 3 years old anyway since despite plans to cover mine from the sun I seldom do so!!! Re: all four kenda 5th wheel tires blew up and melted
I was looking to get 16" wheels and tires for my trailer, but my problem was finding 5 lug 16" wheels. Any ideas on where to get some?

Re: all four kenda 5th wheel tires blew up and melted
I'm running Marathons on my 23' 5'er, they were on there when I bought it so I don't really know how old they are, and have put around 10,000 miles on them so far with no failures. I run 50# and try not to run over 65 MPH. I just got back from a 4500 mile trip from Arizona to Montana and back thru South Dakota, and it was HOT. My 5'er is relatively light-3500# empty which I'm sure is contributing to the longevity. I pulled some chinese brand off of my 26' 5'er and gave them to my inlaws to use on their 28' Shadow Cruiser, about the same weight as mine-8000# loaded. They blew 3 out in less than 200 miles. I put around 6500 miles on them, driving them the same as I do the 23'. They drive at 75-80 mph all the time. I truly believe that the higher speeds are causing too much heat and contributing to the tire failures.
But that's just my opinion.
