Any thoughts on Fleetwood?

I haven't heard a lot here about Fleetwood trailers. We have had a '93 model Terry TT since it was new. We have used it a lot and have had good luck. We are now ready to upgrade to a 5th wheel. We looked at pretty much everything and we don't have any particular brand loyalty to Fleetwood if there is something else out there that we think we would like better. However, Fleetwood makes a model 365 BSQS in two trim level of the Terry Quantum, but the one we would get is the top of the line Triumph. We really like the floorplan and will probably buy this trailer unless I hear of any problems with Fleetwood.
I also intend to go to the RV sites for opinions, but I also want to hear from my friends here at TDS. 'Any thoughts on the subject? Please let me know what you think - good or bad.

Re: Any thoughts on Fleetwood?

Fleetwood had a bad rap a few years back and they nearly went bankrupt. Someone came in and rescued them and since then have been manufacturing a very good trailer. Our 2002 has been absolutely trouble free and we're very happy with it. We have the Wilderness 31G which is a 32' bunkhouse model with large slide-out.

Re: Any thoughts on Fleetwood?

I have an '01 and my in-laws have a '00 of the same model. (31G) Only issue that I know of is on my in-laws. The rubber seal on the metal lip of the slideout that goes against the side of the camper when slideout is closed was installed incorrectly and got some water damage. It was all repaired under warranty and when I bought mine I got a water hose and tested mine and had the adjust the slide out close. Other than that they are always good to go.

Re: Any thoughts on Fleetwood?

We have a lot of friends that have Fleetwood products and they all agree that the dealer network is really poor when it comes to warranty work. They all like their Fleetwoods but hate the dealers.

Re: Any thoughts on Fleetwood?

Thanks for the replys, guys.
Capt. Ron, The dealer is not a problem for me. The dealer where I bought my '93 is where we will get our new rig. We deal with Sherrod RV Center in Silsbee, Texas. Bobby Sherrod is truly one of the most honest people I know as well as being a truly devout Christian. He has always been up front with me and has never taken advantage of us or anyone else and I've been around long enough to know. Thanks for your concern and, once again, thanks for the help.

Re: Any thoughts on Fleetwood?

We have a 99 28 ft 5er and have had absolutely no troubles. Our dealer is also very good. I only took ours one time to check the slide but it there was nothing wrong with it. All we got was a big nice to see you and stop by again if you think you have any problems.

Exactly. Manufacturers rely on their dealer network to handle their customers. No matter how great a manufacturer is, if the dealer sucks, the manufacturer cannot properly take care of their customer. Fortunately my Fleetwood dealer was/is excellent and very attentive. Our total Fleetwood experience has been excellent.

Conversely, our Jayco dealer sucked despite Jayco's excellent customer service. As a result our total experience wasn't as good as with the Fleetwood. However, anytime I had a problem with my Jayco, I dealt with them directly and they took care of me the way the dealer SHOULD have.

Re: Any thoughts on Fleetwood?

I love my Fleetwood. We have had a few issues with the new rig, but have been taken care of well. I do not think you can go wrong if you have a good dealer who stands behind their product.

Re: Any thoughts on Fleetwood?

I have been fulltiming in the same model (365 BSQS Terry Quatum AX6)for about 3 months now. So far everything is mostly ok, it was quite a step down in quality though from my previous rig (97 Holiday Rambler). The main concern for me is that the floor in 2 spots (1 the kitchen slide, 2 the bedroom) seems to have buckled. I have not yet approached the dealer with the problem. If you decide to go with this floorplan (I love the floorplan)and model I would reccomend shopping around to get a good price. My '04 listed for $52,000 after much shopping around I found the one I purchased for $32,999. Most places are still asking around 43-46,000 for the same model. I see from your signature you are in TX, as I am, I would recommend getting one with 2 ac's or installing the second ac yourself after purchase (which is what I did)it is a very simple install as the wiring is already in place. Also on my model there are 2 recalls 1. rubber slide out gaskets improperly installed 2. Samsung microwave can start on its own causing fire hazard. Fleetwood is definately not the best quality built units out there but for the money I think they offer a competitive product. Good luck and enjoy whatever you decide to go with.

That was covered under a recall. Funny thing is, I took mine in for the recall and was told by a very savvy electrician, that this was over-reaction by the manufacturer. He said in his opinion he's seen far more serious issues in manufacturing of other products that were never addressed. He did the recall repair on my unit, but stated quite clearly that he would not have bothered if it was his own.

Re: Any thoughts on Fleetwood?

Well I have and 01 5er I purchased new, It has held up fine until recently when some issues have started to come up. Prior to this there were a couple of things and I had some trouble with my most local dealer doing warranty work. Since I did not purchase from him he would not work on it, and he wondered why I purchased elsewhere. Alot had to do with he wanted 1800 more than where I finally did purchase.

Anyway, as to my thoughts, I must admit we might be a little harder in some ways than your average bears on ours as our kids were 5 and 2 when we purchased and believe it or not they can be harder on these things than you might expect now that they are alittle older we are looking to upgrade and will not be considering a fleetwood product. Mostly after looking at some of the others out there and seeing that these IMHO are built to last say 4 years or so and start to have some problems I would rather take the hit spend alittle more and get better quailty to start with. I have been very taken with the Alpha units, not cheap but not as bad as say the Presidental line. Good value and GREAT workmanship IMHO.

I don't want to trash fleetwood completly I think we made correct move when we bought it pretty much entry level, has held up long enough to be paid for will get some of money back but I think if I waited another 5 years would have little value and lots more problems.

Just my 02

Mark
