Anyone change a bumper pull to a goose neck?

I have been looking for a 2 place goose neck trailer to haul 2 jeeps on for a while now. Anything for a decent price is junk, and anything nice is the price on new.

We got a new trailer to haul our track machine for work, and I was thinking ahout using the old trailer for this. By old i mean a 2001. The trailer is a 14,000gvw deck over bumper pull at 28ft long. It has plenty of deck for the two jeeps.

Has anyone tried to change a bumper pull to a goose neck before? Would there be any legal problems?

I don't see any problem with doing the work/ welding myself. if not my good friend in a certified welder.

I plan on going from MA to Utah and down to PA quite a bit. And for the longer trips, I hear the goose neck is just a lot nicer to drive.

The best thing is the trailer would be able to be used for just about anything, Not just vehicals like a normal 2 place.

If this won't work, I guess i will have to see if i can set up the deckover with some load levelers and sway control.

Re: Anyone change a bumper pull to a goose neck?

I have a 32' gooseneck, and love it. After pulling many bumperpulls in my life the GN is wonderful. Trust me, if you are capable of doing that give it your all. Seems there is a "Junk" GN on EBay right now if I remember right. MAYBE you could buy it, and with the two make one the way you want? Could be cheaper than fabricating a GN from scratch.
I will try to find it again and link it to ya.
Cant find it now, must have ended. I am keeping my eyes on EBAY for a larger one now too,

Somebody at Shop Floor has done it, don't recall who, but he's a regular, should be easy to find. Tons of pics.

Here's the link:

Good luck.

Re: Anyone change a bumper pull to a goose neck?

I am assuming that it has a I beam frame, all you need to do is cut the tounge off flat with the front of the trailer then get some 12" x 19# I Beam you will need roughly 25 to 30 feet depending on your deminsions, you will need two 24" x 30" gussets 1 25K coupler and misc steel for the sub structure between th I beams. I use 3" channel 3' long mid way back and 3x5 angle where the neck transitions to the virtical legs then I put some .375x2 flat bar from the channel to the 3x5 angle and that is where the spare tire goes oh and you will need a plate or tube to mount a break away kit on you will also need some grade 70 .375 saftey chains with the weld on retainers, weld it all in uphill and you will have no problems. I build trailers for a living thats where the deminsions came from

Re: Anyone change a bumper pull to a goose neck?

It seems that easy in my mind. The trailer is actually 10x2 channel steal for the frame. Could be 8". have not taken a tape measure to it yet. I am going to take a ride over to a local trailer place and take some measurements today. They have the same trailer there, just brand new with a goose neck on it. Only they want $9,500 for it.

Would there be any need for it to be inspected when I get it done? Is a goose neck registered any different? I just don't want to have any problems while traveling cross country.

I looked through the post on the shop floor forums and found one post about a removable goose neck set up for a bumper pull trailer. Is that the one you wanted me to find? That did help some with Ideas. Thank you.

Re: Anyone change a bumper pull to a goose neck?

Finally got to take a look at it. Its 8x2" channel steal. Looks like it should not be a problem. Would the same 8x2" cahnnel be strong enough to make the goose neck or would something else be better?

Re: Anyone change a bumper pull to a goose neck?

Aren't trailers DOT approved? If you are changing the structual integrity of thr trailer and I would think it would need to be recertified by somebody. If not and you are in a wreck a lawyer would have a field day with this. Just my .02

Re: Anyone change a bumper pull to a goose neck?

Hi ipkyss,

Check on trailer builders around (100 miles) of Dallas Tx as there dirt cheap.

a Legend 20+5 Dexter tandum duals oil bath forward self adjusting, 12" #19 I-beam, Cooper tires, 3"C cross frame on 16"OC, 6"C side rail, 2-3/8" rub rail, 6" torque tube, rubber mounted lites with side turns, Bulldog GN coupler and landing gear, $5400 new, About $400 delivered. Excellant craftmanship.

I have a 2005 27+5 Legend that's 40ft overall. A very nice trailer and pulls like a dream as there's no road rocking empty or loaded.

Buy UNION work UNION. It pays off in the long run
Define Union:
A labor Union is nothing more than united workers with a common goal for better working conditions.

We all are in some sort of labor Union, some are just larger than others with better working conditions!

Re: Anyone change a bumper pull to a goose neck?

I know there are some cheap nice trailers out there. If I was to get a new trailer, I would buy just what i want. And thats about 8-9k. I was just trying to save the money and make something nice. It seems it would just make more sense to sell this one and get what i want. Its just hard spending that much money, and not making any off it. My personal recreation has taken a backseat lately. Trying to fix that problem. Thanks for the info everyone.

Re: Anyone change a bumper pull to a goose neck?

A friend of mine way telling me a while back that he knew of a place that built the Gooseneck hitch for bumper pull trailers. It cost around 500.00 bucks to have it crossed over.
