We have a 32, 5th wheel non-toyhauler. We also have quads and bikes. My wife usually follows in her Expedition with utility trailer in tow w/toys. Many folks have asked why we don't pull doubles? My wife says NO WAY and I don't think it's the best idea. But we have seem many people doing it. I did it around our neighbor hood and it was OK. Trailer tracked the 5er nicely. It's all under the CGWR and it's right at the legal limit. I have called the Ca. DMV and the DOT and the CHP. They all said go for it, all thats needed is a Class"C" license if the wieght and length are satisfied. So what are you doing???
It is legal, I just have no experience doing so. I do have a CDL with a doubles and triples certification so, I would.
The main reason I responded here is, I've been up and down I-95 a hundred times, and many roads in between, Here on the East Coast, I've never personally seen a double recreational vehicle trailer being pulled. I guess it's a wast coast thing even though it's legal here.

I do it - I live in South Dakota. Main thing is to put an anti-sway (friction type) hitch on the quad trailer. The 3rd item tends to get wavey if you don't.
I haul a 28 ft 5-ver and a 19 ft boat behind that. All in all it trails and hauls pretty well. Just take your time.

Denis,
Check my signature, we've been doing it for a while. Before the boat I used have an enclosed Wells Cargo trailor with my competition motorcycles in it. Once you learn where you can and can't go with it, its not bad at all. Going forward, I have no limitation by it, I can turn just as sharp with or with out it.
As for the legal issue, there are rules out there for it. I got the run around quite a bit actually, everyone I spoke with gave me different answers as to what type of license was required, there was no consistancy between DMV, CHP, or the commercial officers at the truck scales. On more than one occasion, I was told that it would be up to the officer how he interpreted the vehicle code on this. Not being a gambling man, I went thru the testing-paper wise and the driving test, and got me a modified Class A with a doubles endorsement so I wouldn't need to worry about it. My only restrictions I have are the tow vehicle must be an Auto and no air brakes because I didn't take the driving test with air equipped vehicle or stick shift.

Just started pulling doubles this year.
Granted, my second trailer is only a 14ft Aluminum Boat, but the length is there. Like others have said it easy. Be sure to check your local & state laws.
I am under the the CCWR of 20,000lbs. in Michigan the max length is 65ft.
The only way I know the boat is still with me is by looking on the pavement for the shadow of the boat. Thinking about adding a flag or something so that I can see the boat all of the time in the mirror.

I have seen it a bit on the east coast, our parks rareley see the triples pulling in though. Florida doesn't like triples for recreation, but I think they have a small fee for a permit and then it's ok.

I tow doubles a lot, either a flat bed trailer with three quads or a 21 foot ski boat. The only problem I've ever had was a blow out on the flat bed trailer. Someone pulled up next to me on the freeway and let me know what had happened. I would suggest only using a tandem trailer in case something like this happens.

I pull doubles in California, you must have a commercial drivers license wirh a doubles endorsement to do this legally. Trust me I've done the research because I couldn't get the same answer from any one at the DMV or CHP regarding proper licensing.
You have to take all the written tests get a DOT physical and take a driving test. You can take the driving test in your truck pulling your 5th wheel, you do not pull doubles during this test. The test is about 30 minutes and will limit you to pulling doubles with your truck, you will not be qualified to drive a big rig because you did not test in one and you will have a air brake resriction for the same reason. The trailer you pull must have a GVWR or 10,001 lbs or more. You take the written and get your physical and you will be given a permit good for 1 year, anyone with a CDL can be with you when you pull doubles. If you don't have the proper license you could be in big trouble in the event of a accident or ticket. The legal length limit is 65' Hopr this helps. Tom
Thank You. I just thought that you just needed the Non Comerical Class A.

I have been pulling doubles for about 8 yrs. You see it done all the time around the central states. At some area lakes you see more doubles than singles.

I've never pulled doubles myself, but my wife made a trip out to Oklahoma and to pay for the trip she pulled two horse trailers back to NC for a local dealer. She pulled a 4 horse gooseneck slant load w/living quarters and a two horse bumper pull with no problems. She had no special license, never got pulled. This dealer has people do this for him sometimes.
