For Anyone That Thinks Gravity Is An Adequate Tie-Down...

My folks met a pickup truck on the highway last week carrying mattress and box springs and the mattress lifted up and landed immediately in front of their car as they met. I'm assuming that the mattress must have folded up as it went under the car, my Dad says it throw the car in the air as they drove over it. Mom and Dad are fine but it tore up their hood, fender, mirror, and door on the drivers side.

When will people understand that there are forces on a load that gravity may not be able to deal with, tornado/hurricane force winds, extreme centrifugal forces, and accelaration/deccelaration forces?

Edited:
Even if it's a dead calm day and you are driving, whatever is in your truck or trailer is seeing air moving past it at whatever speed is on your speedometer. If you are driving into any head wind just add the wind speed to what's on your speedometer. So, if you're doing 70mph into a 30mph head wind your load is see 100mph winds. Think about it, if the weatherman told you to expect 70 to 100mph winds at your home what would you think? Don't subject your truck or trailer loads to those winds without proper protection.

Re: For Anyone That Thinks Gravity Is An Adequate Tie-Down...

Even someting on a trailer or in a truck, it doesnt take much. I had a customer that had a walk beside stump cutter that he never tied down to the trailer. He said he has never tied anyting down in his 15 years of hauling stuff. He took a corner that he has taken several times and just this one time, wah-la, it rolled of the edge of the trailer. He tried to claim it on his insurance. They laughed at him. He was stuck with the $5000 repair bill. I just laughed and wondered what the H$LL people are thinking!
I hear what you are saying.

Re: For Anyone That Thinks Gravity Is An Adequate Tie-Down...

More and more states are passing laws which require all loads to be tied down and secured. Commercial trucks have been mandated to do this for years, now U-Hauls, pickups, utility trailers, etc. are being covered. A very serious accident in the Seattle area a few years ago was the catalyst out here. However, it seems there is little enforcement until something happens and then it is after the fact.

Re: For Anyone That Thinks Gravity Is An Adequate Tie-Down...

I might be mistaken, but seems I read somewhere, (maybe here) DOT passed / has a set of regulations for tying equipment down. Something about using a minimum of 4 grade-8 chains, and binders / boomers. Does anyone know if this is true, or a link?

You mean like the people who tie stuff to the roof of their car and then think that they can effectively hold on to it with their left arm out of the driver's window?

I've seen them not even bother to try to tie anything...just driver holding one side and passenger holding the other side.

My Dad swears that 20+years ago he and my Uncle passed two women in a VW Beetle with a 2x6 at least 10' long loaded on the Beetle. The important thing was the windows were open and it was sticking out both sides. MORONS!!!!!

Re: For Anyone That Thinks Gravity Is An Adequate Tie-Down...

Copied from Here

A 40-year old man was thrown from the bed of a pickup truck that was going about 20 mph down the highway while he was trying to hold down a king-sized mattress with his body weight. A gust of wind caught the mattress and the man and mattress were thrown out of the truck. The patient was hospitalized for two months and was discharged to a rehabilitation facility.

A 25-year old man was riding in the back of a pickup holding onto a refrigerator. The driver of the pickup tried to take a turn at 40 m.p.h. and the young man and the refrigerator were thrown from the vehicle. The refrigerator fell on the man and he died at the scene.

Many more stories at the referenced site.

Re: For Anyone That Thinks Gravity Is An Adequate Tie-Down...

When I was 18 I was faced with a sick calf and no means to haul her in the bed, so I put her in the cab of the old '68 Chevy. Worked well till we started moving and she started kicking me and the go fast pedal!

Re: For Anyone That Thinks Gravity Is An Adequate Tie-Down...

I had the best teachers as a kid. Got to observe everyway possible to haul something… Wrong.

How about this:

Imagine if you will, coming upon a Friday night auction… not being able to resist making a spur of the moment purchase of Two Heifers.

Hey, it was a good price!

We’ll just rent an open 5x8 U-haul trailer...a couple of new lariat ropes...it’s only sixty miles… at dusk…
