aux. brake controller

had a brake controller installed on my '00 F-250 yesterday, everything plugged into factory harnesses.... installer said it worked at first but lights were flickering when brakes were applied and when he connected the trailer it went out & never came back. He started troubleshooting and discovered my engine shutdown timer which is tied into my brake as a security feature and said nothing was wrong with the brake controller, it had to be my "extra stuff under there" that was causing it not to work and he wasn't fooling with it.

So.... now it's up to me to figure out how to get this thing to work in conjunction with the EST... but right now brake controller doesn't even have power to it and I can't find any blown fuses anywhere. Does anybody know where the factory brake controller harness gets it's power from or what fuses I may be over-looking?

I would ask a moderator to move this to the towing forum. You will find alot more towing pro's there.

under the hood on your year if i recall, but, may want to make sure the pigtail is wired right...the colors DO NOT MATCH from the controller wires to the pigtail that connects under your dash...

found online owner's manual by searching here and found where the fuse was supposed to be.... no fuse. Apparently the EST does back feed some voltage to the brake controller which was the "flickering" the installer saw... but it was never even powered up to begin with that's why it "completely went out" when he hooked the trailer up. Everything seems to be working now.... I knew I should have just did it myself to begin with. lol

I spent 20 years at Air Force headquarters, as a "headquarters type". I was always amazed at the guys in the field that didn't understand that the answers to their questions are usually in the manual for their functional area. Our constant refrain was RTFM = read the functional manual.

For Y2K model year, the trailer tow pkg was an option. It included a trailer brake wiring kit and some fuses and relays in a sack in the glovebox. But to wire up the trailer brakes and trailer plug, you had to install those relays and fuses. It sounds like either your truck didn't have the trailer towing pkg, or else no one ever installed it.

Glad you got it working.

I installed a Tekonsha Primus brake controller a month ago. Of course, it does nothing without a trailer hooked up. (no lights, etc)

Next week I'm towing a 26' car hauler. Hope it works like it's supposed to!
