Is anyone running this set-up? if so, do you regret not getting a slider? I'm thinking of getting a new pickup but not sure if I want to step down to a short box from a long box. My only reason for wanting to go with long box is for more cab clearance with the companion 5th. Any info would help.

I have one and have no problems. Pulls fine, handles fifth wheel fine (38'Cedar Creek)and has never hit the cab.
I just picked up on 01 short bed for a hunting/hauling truck. Hauled a lot of gooseneck with no problem and just hauled my 36' 5ver and then a 29' with NO PROBLEMS. I was very shocked I have alway had long beds but this short bed x-cab was to good of a deal to pass up.
I had no trailer to cab problems and I made some real tight turns backing in.
Thanks for the reply guys. I am really leaning towards a short box but would hate to give up my companion, I love it. I have a 30' FR Wilcat. I will just have to be careful when backing.

I have heard you can mount the B&W backwards on a short box for more clrearence. Obviously this won't tow as well IMO.
I have my ball positioned on my short box truck ahead of the axle like it should be. Granted my trailer is not that big I can say it has never been a problem. My trailer will hit my cab but so long as I am paying attention, it has never been a problem.
All my experience with this goosneck is with converted fiver. I would think an acutal gooseneck flat deck or horse trailer would clear a cab fine on a short box.

Same here. I know I may be able to move the hitch back a couple inches just with the adjustment on the Companion. I have never heard nor seen any companions installed backward. Just seems kinda scary mounting the hitch wrong purposely when towing a heavy load.

I would not say installed wrong. Pretty sure it is right in the B&W turnover ball instructions that you can instal it with the ball behind the axle on a short box.
Edit, I just looked at the destructions. Short box is 3.5 inches in front of the rear axle and a long bed is either 6.5 inches or 3.5 inches ahead of the rear axle.

Love my companion too. My fiver is a 1998 so the front is real square/flat so if I make a sharp turn I will hit the cab. I'm talking a full 90degree turn. Pretty rare that you have to make that kind of turn. I'm looking for a newer fiver so maybe with the curved fronts there won't be that issue. The RV dealer I was at had an F250 SB that they pulled everything around with. It had a slider so I measured it all the way forward and backward and it looks like I won't have any clearance issues with a new fiver if I decide to get one. Almost all the RVers I see are pulling huge fivers w/ a short box. I doubt they all have sliders. A slider would be nice but, I really like the open bed of my truck. My .02. Eric
