If your talking about the distance from the back of the cab, I'd go with 49". This should still be slightly ahead of the axle on a longbed and will allow you to swing a full 90 deg. without putting the trailer into the back of the cab. From a handling and stability standpoint, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the two positions.
He is talking about from the back of the bed.I mount mine at 49" but both of my trucks are long bed so I have plenty of room for my toolbox and fueltank. If you have a short bed it would probably be best to mount it at 46" if you are planning on mounting anything in front of it.49" just bridges the weight a liitle better.

Install went smoothly. My 14 yr old son & I knocked it out in about 4-5 hours with lots of breaks due to the heat. Also installed the Companion. We picked up our new Wildcat 5er this last weekend. Seems like a very sturdy set-up. Thanks for the input guys.

When I installed mine I did it at the 49" location like you did. I eneded up adding 1/2" spacers to the muffer hanger bracket as well as the one supplied with the kit for the tail pipe. This prevented any exhaust rattles against the hitch. It made my truck much quieter, even my wife noticed.
