I noticed there is a batery on my trailer. I know i is used when the breakaway clip is yanked out, but is it used under normal breaking? or is the power from my truck used? also, how is this battery kept charged? does the truck charging system keep it charged?
thanks for any help/clarification

Just for the "Break away" system. Under normal towing the power comes thru the Pigtail from the truck.
Your truck SHOULD keep it charged yes.. if it is wired correctly.

The battery’s only used for the trailer brakes in case of a break away. Your trailer brakes will be controlled from current from your brake controller. Your trailer may be wired so that the break away battery is charged from your truck when the trailer is plugged up and the truck is running. I have seen some break away batteries not tied into the charging system. I had to wire two of my trailers so the battery would charge from the truck. A good way to know is check the voltage of the battery with the truck shut off and then check it again with the truck running. The voltage should be slightly higher with the truck running.
I do have a couple small lights that can be turned on and off with a switch wired into the break away battery on one trailer.

Just a side question. Can the break away system be wired to a large 12 car battery meant to run lights and such on my camper trailer rather than a seperate tiny battery?

sure it could but if that battery is low you brakes would not work very well or not at all if the breakaway is pulled
some states are starting to require more safety like breakaway systems and im pretty sure the seperate battery would be required for it to meet dot specs, but why remove it anyway?

I do not think you have to have a separate battery, and the larger one for any other accesories if charged would work better I bet. My battery on my take three is just a small MC battery, pretty puny, I checked the other day with a volt meter, to see where it was at, sitting at about 9.5VDC,, it will still operate the brakes I imagine, when you have the controller turned down, it puts less voltage than that on the brakes I think,,,

I don't think there is any law requiring a seperate battery, if the trailer has a battery for other uses then that is fine and is the way it is always done on every RV I've ever seen and my dump trailer. The federal requirement, here in paragraph D-- Brakes-- merely states 15 minutes of application, they don't say how it has to be powered.
