Battery to power Winch

I am in the process of putting a portable electric winch on my gooseneck trailer and was wondering if anyone has done the same and what type/brand of battery was used! The winch will be a 9000# multimount that I can move around to 3 different trailers. I have looked at Optima deep cycle but are they worth the price? Any shared info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! Kelly

Re: Battery to power Winch

If you plan on towing all 3 trailers with the same truck, you are best off to just run power from the truck. All you need is a heavy cable from the truck battery to the back of the truck, and a quick (forklift) connector. Just run the ground through the frame.

The wire you can get at Home Depot, I use 4 AWG wire, costs about 60c / foot I think. Quick connectors you can get at www.awdirect.com ,or any place that carries electric forklift parts.

Re: Battery to power Winch

I have a 15,000# winch mounted on my gooser, and I keep it powered by a two man battery from rural king. These batteries don't drain near as fast as most regular sized batteries. I bought it for 90.00, and am in the process of wiring up a battery isolator system to charge the aux battery while driving. I buy a lot of dead tractors, so this thing gets used quite a bit.

I welded up a nice battery tray between my upright beams on the neck of the trailer, and had an uluminum battery box built for the battery and remote lead. I drilled holes for the cables and used rubber bushings so that it is completely enclosed to prevent corrosion. I also keep a big masterlock on it......you never know!

Not in my book...they have half the amp hour capacity and cost twice as much as a regular deep cycle!

If the box is in fact completely enclosed you will get MORE corrosion due to the acid fumes being retained.

Re: Battery to power Winch

Thanks for the info! I have a 24 ft lead wired to the back of the truck and have the Anderson quick connectors on the truck and winch! I would also like a good deep cycle battery for the times when my brothers want to use the trailer! I don't borrow my truck to anyone for any reason and want the peace of mind knowing I don't need to go with them if I have something else planned!
