Blowout Question

I have a 31' TT and I have yet to experience a blowout while driving. I take good care of the tires and have changed out tires that have had nails and other road junk in them before the trip. So, I wonder how a truck and trailer act during a blow out? I don't expect one, just want to have an idea of how to safely handle the situation should it arise.

Re: Blowout Question

I had a blowout with my old 27' TT ...didn't feel or hear a thing...a few passing cars got my attention and I looked in the rear view to see sparks flying everywhere...I thought the door/ramp broke, opened up and was dragging on the road...I found a place to pull over and realized it was a blown tire...

Luckily it didn't cause too much damage to the trailer...the tire and rim were toasted!...the biggest thing to check would be your electric brake connections...I had a wire ripped loose by the tire flapping around inside the wheel well...luckily I carry around extra self sealing wire nuts...

Also...I wouldn't trust the tires that come on the trailers from the factory...I've had several friends blow fairly new low mileage"stock" tires...including myself...even if they look ok...I'd replace them with the best quality trailer type tire I could get...

Re: Blowout Question

I appreciate the feedback. I hope to never experience it, but good to know.

Re: Blowout Question

On a multiple-axle trailer, chance are you will never even feel it. It may sway a little when it happens at first, but not too badly. Unless you hear or see the tire blow, you may not even know it happened until you get there and your rim is toast...

Re: Blowout Question

5 times for me and someone always honks and points or you would never know on a dual or triple axle trailer.

Re: Blowout Question

Hi FF1,

Depends more on the road surface that your on at the time of blowout. One time I put the third axle of a 4 axle trailer off the road edge and blew a tire on the third axle passenger side tire. I had no problems feeling that blowout.

On my TT, I blew out the drivers side rear tire on back axle in a construction zone. I didn't feel that tire until I got back up to road speed on a smooth surface and then only because I seen smoke from the tire before I felt the trailer.

If you playing close attention to the way your trailer is pulling, then you can feel it pretty good.

Re: Blowout Question

I had a blowout on my truck while towing the trailer. Right inner. I heard it, but with the dually's I never felt it. I simply pulled over and changed the tire. (after I unhitched the trailer.)

Re: Blowout Question

Best indicator of a blow out on trailer is passing car honking and pointing. Other one is if you happen to look in mirror and see tire going everywhere. The hard part is changing it when it is 118 out. Been there done that. Then of course there is the damage in the wheel well.

Re: Blowout Question

My last trip from Western New York to Indiana with my gooseneck trailer I lost 2 tires. One on the way down and one on the way back. It was the last 2 of 4 general tires I had. I lost all of them in a 1 year period.

If you have more than 1 axle you may not immediately notice the problem. If you have a sudden blow out you may hear it, or as 2 of my generals did they blew off the tread and flapped around long enough to to damage my fenders. That was very easy to notice!!! I tow heavy and My biggest concern is losing one tire then another from running on only 1. If I lost 2 I would not have enough spares. I am thinking of taking 2 spares with me but have not done so yet.

I just got new rims and Goodyear "G" rated 110psi tires. Needed new rims to be rated at 110 psi. Ran to PA & back and they seem fine. 3 stops to check the lug nuts in a 4 hour trip, and they do need to be checked with all new rims and lug nuts. I was amazed that they needed to be tightened so much.

The new tires even though they are listed as 235/85 16 the metric number is a little different from a standard 235/85 16. The tires are lower profile and a little wider.

WFTREE

PS These tires are not cheap!!!

Re: Blowout Question

I just blew the second of four factory tires and did replace them with trailer rated 14 plys.

I have a friend with a shop and he order the tires and I did the work at his place. Just the weight diff of the tires was enough to tell me that anything over about 10k gross needs trailer rated.

A lot of manufacturers are sending out trailers with light truck or worse and unless you are very particular about load distribution and carry light loads I would not trust them.

Next new trailer I buy I will probably trade the tires back before it leaves the lot.

Also get high press. stems when you change out tires. My new tires are 100 psi and that is what I have been advises to run them at.
